Maine Fly Company

Brand & Community Manager

Job Description

Brand & Community Manager Maine Fly Company — Yarmouth, Maine Part-time | 20-30 hours per week | $24-$30/hour Opportunity to grow into a full-time role About Maine Fly Company Maine Fly Company is a growing Maine-based fly rod company built around craftsmanship, fly fishing, community, and the outdoors. We're looking for someone to take ownership of an increasingly important part of our business: how we show up in our community, how we tell our story, and how we stay connected to the people who support our brand. This is not simply a social media position, and it's not a traditional marketing desk job. We're looking for someone who wants to become an active part of Maine Fly Company—capturing what's happening inside and outside our shop, telling those stories through content, developing relationships and partnerships, helping organize events and community programs, and finding new ways to connect Maine Fly Company with the fly-fishing and outdoor communities around us. We're a small company, and our people don't live inside narrow job descriptions. The primary responsibility of this position will be brand, community, content, and outreach , but this person will also be cross-trained in our Customer Experience operation and become a capable additional resource within the shop. What You'll OwnContent & Social Media We want to capture the active lifestyle of Maine Fly Company—not manufacture a lifestyle that doesn't exist. You'll spend time with our rod builders, customers, guides, events, fishing community, products, and partners and turn what's actually happening around MFC into consistent, engaging content. You'll take increasing ownership of our anchor Instagram and Facebook channels , while helping us further develop newer and emerging channels such as TikTok and YouTube , as well as identifying other platforms and opportunities that can meaningfully expand the reach of the Maine Fly Company brand. Our established content expectations include approximately: 3-4 quality feed posts/Reels per week Active Stories approximately 5 days per week Consistent short-form video content Capturing photography and video from the shop, fishing, events, customers, and community Organizing and maintaining our photo/video asset library Engaging with comments, messages, and our online community Developing customer- and community-generated content Identifying stories and opportunities that we should be talking about We're much more interested in good storytelling, meaningful engagement, and business impact than simply chasing follower counts. Community, Events & Partnerships We want Maine Fly Company to become increasingly active and visible within the communities we serve. You'll help develop relationships with guides, lodges, fly tiers, conservation organizations, outdoor brands, creators, clubs, media, breweries, local businesses, and other potential partners. You'll help develop and execute programs such as fly-tying nights, casting and educational events, shop gatherings, collaborations, community initiatives, and other opportunities that bring people together around fly fishing and the outdoors. As the position develops, our goals include approximately two meaningful partnership or collaboration activations per month and at least one community event or activation per month . You'll also help identify PR and earned-media opportunities and find new ways to put Maine Fly Company in front of the right audiences. Some evening and weekend availability will be required, along with periodic seasonal travel to fly-fishing shows and other events. Repurposed Waders This position will also provide occasional brand and community support to Repurposed Waders , our affiliated 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused specifically on keeping used fishing waders out of landfills by finding productive new uses for the material. There are natural opportunities for cross-pollination between Maine Fly Company and Repurposed Waders through storytelling, social content, events, partnerships, conservation initiatives, and community engagement. The organizations remain separate, but they share a community and an environmental story that this position can help us tell. Customer Experience & Shop Support Being able to authentically represent Maine Fly Company starts with understanding our customers, our products, and how our company actually works. Our Customer Experience operation handles a broad range of day-to-day responsibilities, including retail, customer service, shipping, web-order fulfillment, inventory support, and coordinating customer orders with our rod-building team. This position will be cross-trained in those functions . Brand and community will remain your primary responsibility, but over time you should become comfortable enough with our products, customers, and systems to provide occasional front-of-house and Customer Experience support during busy periods, staff absences, events, vacations, or other times when the business needs additional coverage. You'll learn Shopify. You'll learn our products and rods. You'll spend time with customers. You'll understand how orders move through the company. And you'll learn enough about fly fishing and Maine Fly Company to comfortably and authentically represent the brand. We believe being connected to the actual business will also make you considerably better at telling its story. How We'll Measure Success This isn't a position where success means, "We posted some stuff this month." We'll use a straightforward scorecard to measure progress and keep the position focused on results. Depending on the stage of the role, we'll look at: Consistency and quality of social content Stories and short-form video cadence Engagement, shares, saves, comments, profile visits, and website traffic Growth and development of newer social channels Community and customer engagement Partnerships and collaborations developed Events and programs successfully executed Earned-media and PR opportunities Growth of our usable photography and video library Traffic, customer growth, and business impact where we can reasonably connect them Ability to independently manage projects and follow through Competency as a trained backup within Customer Experience and the shop During the first 90 days, we'd expect this person to begin establishing performance baselines, understand the Maine Fly Company voice and products, build an organized content system, begin developing new partnerships, contribute to community programming, and start becoming comfortable within our Customer Experience operation. Who We're Looking For You don't need to check every traditional marketing box. You do need to be someone who can create, communicate, organize, and follow through. We're looking for someone who can pick up a phone and build a relationship, shoot and edit a compelling piece of content, write naturally, organize an event, communicate professionally with a customer, and take ownership of projects without needing constant direction. You don't need to be an expert fly angler on Day 1. You do need to have a genuine interest in fly fishing, the outdoors, and the community surrounding them , and you need to be excited about learning our products and becoming part of that world. We're particularly interested in someone who is: Creative and organized Comfortable shooting and editing short-form video A strong, natural writer Comfortable meeting and communicating with new people Capable of representing a brand professionally in person Able to manage multiple projects and deadlines Reliable and able to work independently Comfortable working in a small-business environment where people regularly help outside their primary lane Willing to learn new systems and responsibilities Interested in growing with the company rather than simply completing assigned tasks Experience in social media, content creation, community management, events, public relations, hospitality, retail, outdoor recreation, or brand marketing can all be relevant. We're less interested in the perfect résumé than we are in finding the right person with demonstrated ability, curiosity, reliability, and initiative. Hours, Compensation & Growth This position will begin at approximately 20-30 hours per week at $24-$30 per hour , depending on experience, with a typical schedule likely around 25 hours. This is primarily an in-person position based at Maine Fly Company in Yarmouth, Maine , because being around our people, customers, products, and community is an important part of the job. We're open to someone who prefers to remain within the 20-30-hour range long term. However, our goal is to grow this position alongside Maine Fly Company , and there is a legitimate opportunity for it to develop into a full-time position with increased responsibility for the right person. Full-time employees at Maine Fly Company have access to additional benefits, including health benefits and paid time off. If this position develops into full-time status, it would become eligible for the applicable full-time employee benefits offered by the company. Current benefits for this position include employee discounts, professional development support, and applicable paid time off. How to Apply We're intentionally asking for more than a résumé. If this position interests you, please provide: Your résumé Examples of at least three pieces of content you've personally created At least one Reel, TikTok, YouTube Short, or other short-form video you've personally created A brief example of something you've helped grow —a brand, social account, community, event, organization, project, business, or similar effort—and specifically what you did One sample social caption for Maine Fly Company. Spend a little time getting to know us first. In 150 words or less, tell us: Why Maine Fly Company, and why this position?
