This is not your typical HVAC Service Manager position. Mountain West Heating & Air Conditioning is looking for an experienced Residential HVAC Service Manager to lead and grow our service department. We are a 100% residential heating and air conditioning company. We do not do apartment work. We do not work with home warranty companies. We do not service mini-splits. We focus on doing residential HVAC the right way—and we are looking for a leader who has the technical knowledge, leadership ability, and high standards to help us continue doing it at a very high level. THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for someone who understands that a great service department starts with great technicians, strong processes, and exceptional leadership. As Service Manager, you will be responsible for the performance, development, and day-to-day operation of our residential service department. You will work closely with technicians, dispatch, customers, and company leadership to ensure that every service call is handled professionally and efficiently. This is a leadership position—but we want someone with enough field experience to understand the work, diagnose problems, coach technicians, and earn their respect.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Lead the Service Team Lead, coach, mentor, and hold residential HVAC technicians accountable. Develop technicians both technically and professionally. Conduct regular technician meetings and training. Ride along with technicians and provide hands-on coaching when appropriate. Help create a culture of professionalism, accountability, and teamwork. Recruit and help develop top HVAC talent. Maintain Technical Excellence Provide technical support to technicians when difficult diagnostic situations arise. Review challenging repairs, callbacks, and customer concerns. Maintain high standards for installation, repair, diagnostics, and workmanship. Help technicians improve their troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. Ensure technicians are following proper procedures and company standards. Stay current with modern residential HVAC equipment, controls, electrical systems, airflow, refrigerant systems, heat pumps, communicating equipment, and high-efficiency systems. Manage Service Operations Work with dispatch to maximize technician productivity and customer service. Monitor department performance and key performance indicators. Reduce callbacks and improve first-time fix rates. Monitor technician efficiency, average ticket, maintenance opportunities, and overall department performance. Help ensure vehicles, tools, equipment, and inventory are properly maintained. Assist with scheduling and daily operational decisions. Handle escalated customer issues professionally and effectively. Build a Better Department Identify opportunities to improve systems, processes, and technician performance. Establish clear expectations and hold the team accountable. Help create training programs based on real-world technician needs. Work with company leadership to establish and achieve department goals. Help develop the next generation of Mountain West technicians and leaders.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
This position requires a strong technical background in residential HVAC. You must have full knowledge of residential heating and air conditioning systems and be able to confidently understand what your technicians are dealing with in the field.
Our ideal candidate has:
Extensive residential HVAC field experience Previous service management or leadership experience Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills Comprehensive knowledge of residential HVAC systems Strong understanding of electrical, refrigeration, airflow, controls, and HVAC diagnostics Experience with high-efficiency and communicating systems The ability to read and understand electrical diagrams and sequence of operation Excellent communication and customer service skills Strong organizational and problem-solving skills The ability to coach technicians rather than simply manage them High standards for workmanship and professionalism A valid driver's license and clean driving record The ability to lead by example and hold people accountable MOST IMPORTANTLY... You need to know HVAC. We are not looking for someone who simply knows how to manage schedules and paperwork. We are looking for an experienced HVAC professional who can walk into a difficult diagnostic situation, understand what is happening, help a technician solve the problem, and then teach that technician how to handle it the next time.
