Less than a quarter of that waste is composted: the rest is dumped down drains, sent to incinerators, or ends up in landfills. This food could feed the hungry or be turned into compost. OSPIRG is working to pass a bill that requires large businesses like restaurants and grocery stores to donate or compost uneaten food. We are hiring canvassers and field managers in our Portland office to educate the public about the issue, raise critical funds, and generate the visibility necessary to influence decision-makers.
As a canvasser you will:
Educate and engage citizens on a campaign to make real change on pressing environmental and public interest issues Develop essential communication and political advocacy skills Build membership and raise money for nonprofit groups in your community Earn leadership opportunities, supervising and managing staff in the field Gain the experience and connections needed to launch your career in nonprofit and policy work We are looking for: We are seeking hard-working individuals with good communication skills and a passion for social change.   • Eligibility for benefits depends on your position, location, duration of employment, and other factors.
Pay:
Canvassing staff earn a base pay of $16.75 per hour, plus can earn 20% of what they raise over our minimum fundraising standard, giving staff the opportunity to earn more than $20 per hour. Staff never earn less than minimum wage for the hours that they work. Depending on performance and location, canvassers earn an average of between $17 to $21 per hour.
