GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this position is to monitor and screen all waste and recyclable materials delivered by residents to County Recycle Centers. This position assists the public in placing materials in proper containers, monitors container volume, and maintains site appearance and safety. Duties include opening and closing the facility, assisting drivers with container changes, sorting recyclables, removing contaminants, monitoring waste disposal, and directing residents to appropriate containers. They also handle minor maintenance tasks and assist handicapped individuals with waste disposal. This role requires independent work with minimal supervision, ensuring the center operates efficiently and meets community needs. This position works under the supervision of the Recycle Center Crew Leader and the Solid Waste Director.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Restricts the use of the Recycle Center to Oconee County residents and property owners: verifies license plates and/or identifications as needed. Notifies businesses to use the Solid Waste Complex or landfill and notifies supervisor if business or contractor violates county ordinance. Opens and closes the recycle center, ensuring timely service. Provides customer service by answering questions, resolving conflicts, and informing the public about proper recycling and waste disposal methods. Monitors loads of waste delivered to the center for disposal: directs residents to appropriate containers; and screens disposals to prevent hazardous materials from entering the waste stream. Directs traffic at centers. Sorts and places recyclable material from small public containers into large roll-off containers, ensuring the removal of contaminants and proper placement of materials. Monitors the volume of recyclable containers to ensure they have adequate capacity for incoming recyclables and household waste. Notifies the office when containers reach maximum capacity so they can be emptied promptly. Operates stationary compactors and ensures the proper disposal of household waste and recyclables. Assists drivers in changing out compactors/containers and cleans under and around containers. Maintains the recycle center and surrounding area in a safe, clean, and orderly manner; picks up garbage and debris, pulls weeds, washes the parking lot, etc. Maintains records of daily activities. Answers the telephone and provides information and assistance to callers. Cleans and maintains assigned tools. Informs the public/residents on the proper disposal methods of household waste and how to prepare recyclables to be recycled. Assists with other solid waste department functions as assigned. Assists handicapped residents with placing recyclables/garbage into the appropriate receptacles. Assists the Recycle Center Crew Leader with atypical activities or events. Assists with minor maintenance tasks such as painting and yard work. Performs other related duties as assigned.
