Job Description
Little Traverse Bay Humane Society (LTBHS) is seeking a highly reliable, compassionate, and team-oriented individual to join our staff and help fulfill our organizational mission to sustainably and respectfully serve pets and the people who love them with compassionate, comprehensive, and exemplary care. The Animal Care Attendant is responsible for providing exceptional daily care to animals while maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment. This position will also cross-train in the front desk operations of our boarding and grooming facility and will be expected to learn and assist with customer service and administrative responsibilities as needed. The successful candidate will be comfortable transitioning between hands-on animal care and interacting professionally with clients and members of the public. Applicants must be dependable, detail-oriented, and able to recognize that thorough monitoring, cleaning, and daily care are essential to maintaining the health and well-being of the animals in our care. This position requires an individual who can work independently, manage competing priorities, follow established procedures, and communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors. Animal care responsibilities include, but are not limited to, handling domestic animals of all ages, sizes, and temperaments; feeding and medicating animals as directed; monitoring animals for changes in health or behavior and communicating concerns to appropriate staff; cleaning and disinfecting kennels and animal housing areas using RESCUE or approved cleaning products; providing basic grooming, training, and enrichment; cleaning and maintaining facilities and equipment; and safely collecting and disposing of waste and other bodily fluids. Front desk responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, greeting and assisting clients; answering phones and responding to emails and other customer inquiries; checking boarding and grooming clients in and out; maintaining accurate client and pet records; scheduling and confirming boarding and grooming appointments; processing payments and completing transactions; communicating facility policies and services; coordinating client requests with boarding and grooming staff; and maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming reception area. This position requires excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with a wide variety of people. Candidates must be comfortable working with clients who may have questions, concerns, or special requests regarding the care of their pets. Attention to detail is especially important, as accurate scheduling, recordkeeping, medication information, and communication are essential to providing safe and consistent care. Applicants should understand that this is a physically demanding position that may require standing for an 8-10 hour day, working within specific time constraints, lifting at least 40 pounds, and working in a variety of weather conditions. Working with animals often requires patience, understanding, flexibility, and the ability to remain calm and focused in a busy environment. The animals in our care may have a wide range of medical, behavioral, and emotional needs, and their individual care requirements may vary significantly. The successful candidate will be willing to learn multiple areas of our operations and understand that teamwork is essential to providing excellent care and service. Employees may be asked to assist in areas outside of their primary responsibilities based on the needs of the organization and the day's priorities. This position may also provide opportunities for additional training and advancement within LTBHS. Individuals with an interest in veterinary medicine or shelter medicine may have the opportunity to develop additional skills and, for the right candidate with relevant experience and demonstrated performance, may be considered for future full-time opportunities within our shelter medicine program. If you are dependable, hardworking, compassionate toward animals, enjoy working with people, and are looking for a position where no two days are exactly alike, we would love to hear from you.
