We are currently prepping the studio to begin classes, events and workshops. The expected grand opening date and volunteer position start date will be in September 2026. Located in Portland, OR, the studio offers classes, workshops, and open studio hours for learners at all levels. Clay Rose Pottery emphasizes creativity, craftsmanship, and a supportive learning environment where people can explore pottery in a safe, inclusive space. The studio values hands-on instruction, collaborative learning, and the joy of making functional and sculptural ceramic pieces. Role Description The Pottery Instructor is a volunteer, on-site role based at Clay Rose Pottery in Portland, OR. This position will transition in to a part-time position within 30-60 days if all criteria is met. This role involves planning and leading pottery classes for beginner and intermediate learners, including demonstrations of wheel throwing, hand-building, and glazing techniques. The instructor will guide students through safe studio practices, provide individualized feedback, and help maintain studio organization, cleanliness, and equipment care. Day-to-day tasks include preparing lesson plans and materials, loading and unloading kilns, mixing glazes, monitoring student progress, and supporting studio events or workshops. The role also involves fostering an inclusive, encouraging classroom environment where all participants feel welcomed and supported in their creative growth. Qualifications Strong practical skills in pottery and ceramic arts, including experience with both functional and decorative work. Proficiency in wheel throwing and related techniques, with the ability to demonstrate and troubleshoot for learners at different levels. Knowledge of glazing processes, surface decoration, clay bodies, and kiln firing best practices. Teaching or instructional experience, with the ability to explain concepts clearly, manage a classroom, and adapt to varied learning styles. Commitment to studio safety, equipment care, and maintaining a clean, organized workspace. Effective communication skills and a collaborative, inclusive approach to working with students and colleagues. Prior experience in a ceramics studio or arts education environment is preferred. Availability to work as a volunteer part-time schedule for 30-60 days as needed for classes and events. This role will transfer in to a full or part-time position after the volunteer trial period ends.
