PWcu Overview:
The Product Development Engineer II (PDE II - Mechanical) is an independent, execution-focused engineering role responsible for owning defined mechanical subsystems or workstreams within new product development programs. This role represents the core production capacity of the engineering team and is expected to deliver high-quality, manufacturable designs with minimal supervision. PDE II engineers operate within established scope, requirements, and constraints, exercising sound technical judgment on routine decisions while escalating higher-risk or ambiguous issues to senior engineers. Success in this role is measured by reliable execution, quality of output, schedule adherence, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams. This role operates within the Product Development Engineer (PDE) Framework, which defines role intent, utilization expectations, and economic alignment across PDE levels. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Mechanical Design & Execution
  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and enclosures using SolidWorks in support of defined project scopes.
  • Own assigned subsystems or workstreams from concept refinement through prototype and early production support.
  • Create detailed 3D models, drawings, and release-ready documentation for prototyping and manufacturing.
  • Perform tolerance analysis, material selection, and manufacturability reviews within established design constraints.
  • Apply GD&T principles appropriately to ensure functional and manufacturable designs. Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Collaborate with Electrical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and Manufacturing partners to ensure integrated, buildable solutions.
  • Interface regularly with Project Managers to align technical execution with scope, schedule, and delivery expectations.
  • Coordinate with vendors and manufacturing partners for prototype and low-volume production part fabrication. Prototyping, Testing & Iteration
  • Support prototype builds, hands-on assembly, and functional testing activities.
  • Analyze test results and field feedback to identify root causes and implement design improvements.
  • Troubleshoot design and manufacturing issues, implementing revisions as required. Documentation & Process Adherence
  • Document development activities, design decisions, test results, and revisions in SharePoint and project tracking systems.
  • Maintain accurate BOMs, drawings, and revision history throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Adhere to internal design standards, development processes, and documentation requirements. Client & Stakeholder Interaction
  • Participate in client meetings as needed to provide technical clarification, design rationale, and progress updates.
  • Communicate technical information clearly and professionally to internal and external stakeholders. Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Typically 3-5 years of experience in mechanical product design, development, or prototyping.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including part modeling, assemblies, drawings, and basic simulation tools.
  • Strong working knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and GD&T.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute independently within defined scope and constraints.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate engineering documentation and BOMs.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal, and rapid prototyping processes.
  • Familiarity with FEA, thermal analysis, or structural simulation tools.
  • Exposure to electro-mechanical integration and electronics packaging.
  • Experience working in regulated or compliance-driven industries (e.g., medical, industrial, consumer products).
  • Familiarity with internal systems such as SharePoint, Power BI, Dynamics 365, or similar tools. Competencies & Attributes
  • Reliable, detail-oriented engineer with a strong sense of ownership.
  • Comfortable working independently while knowing when to escalate issues.
  • Collaborative team player who communicates effectively across disciplines.
  • Adaptable to changing project priorities and fast-paced development environments.
  • Committed to delivering high-quality, manufacturable design solutions. Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, or move between office and lab environments for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity required for working with prototypes and mechanical assemblies.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to inspect components, assemblies, and prototypes.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Work Environment This role operates in a combination of office and laboratory environments, with regular interaction with engineers, designers, and manufacturing partners. Occasional travel may be required for client meetings, supplier coordination, or prototype reviews. BAI, Inc. is an equal employment opportunity employer.
PLEASE NOTE
Management reserves the right to change or otherwise modify the functions of this job in order to meet the needs of the company. Additional duties may also be assigned. Consideration will be given to make reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
