CAD Engineer

Job Description

Job Title:
Automotive CAD Designer - Exterior Mirrors & Vision Systems Job Summary We are seeking a highly specialized and detail-oriented Automotive CAD Designer to lead the digital development of advanced exterior mirror assemblies and vision systems. In this role, you will translate engineering concepts and styling inputs into production-ready 3D models and 2D technical drawings. Because exterior mirrors are critical for vehicle safety, aerodynamics, and electronics integration, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to engineer complex mechanisms, integrate camera/sensor technology, and ensure compliance with global regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities 3D Modeling & Mirror System Component Design Create and mature complex 3D solid and surface models for complete exterior mirror assemblies, including housing covers, glass sub-assemblies, actuators, turn signals, and mounting bases. Develop Class-A and high-quality B-side geometry, ensuring seamless mechanical packaging while preserving the aesthetic intent of the design studio. Design complex plastic injection-molded components, die-cast brackets, and glass mechanisms. Work with molding, paint and assembly groups to develop manufacturable designs. Follow company design standards and customer specifications. Attend design reviews to minimize cost and manufacturing problems. Create attachment/alignment features to maintain system durability and ease of assembly. Perform draft checks to ensure molding quality. Establish program priorities with the help of the design manager and take necessary actions to keep programs on time. Packaging & Electrical Integration Package and route internal electrical wiring harnesses, glass actuators, blind-spot monitoring (BSD) sensors, heated glass elements, power-folding actuators, puddle lamps, temperature sensors and surround-view camera systems. Perform vehicle and system level packaging and clearance checks (clash analysis) to eliminate interferences within the mirror; door assembly; and window glass during operation. Compliance, Feasibility & Technical Documentation Ensure designs satisfy global automotive regulatory requirements (e.g., FMVSS 111, ECE R46) for driver field of view, breakaway safety performance, and reflective surface areas. Generate detailed 2D engineering drawings with comprehensive Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to control critical gap-and-flush interfaces with the vehicle door. Collaborate with aerodynamic and aeroacoustic teams to implement surface modifications that reduce wind noise and drag. Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) assessments for plastic injection molding, automated assembly, and high-volume manufacturing.
Qualifications & Skills Education & Experience Education:
Associate degree in CAD/Design, Automotive Engineering Technology, or a related discipline. Technical experience will be considered in leu of education.
Experience:
5+ years of experience in automotive mechanical design, with a strong preference for candidates who have worked on exterior trim, lighting, or mirror systems.
Technical Skills CAD Software Proficiency:
Advanced expertise in
CATIA V5
specifically within part design, surface design (GSD) and assembly workbenches.
Manufacturing Knowledge:
Deep understanding of plastic injection molding (gate locations, draft angles, parting lines, lifters, slides, sink marks) and die-casting constraints.
GD&T & Tolerance Stack-ups:
Proficient in applying
ASME Y14.5
standards and conducting tolerance stack-up analysis for multi-component assemblies.
PLM Tools:
Experience utilizing Product Lifecycle Management systems such as Teamcenter for data management and engineering change tracking. Soft Skills Exceptional spatial visualization skills to manage complex moving mechanisms (folding and glass tilt actions). Ability to perform mathematical calculations. Strong collaborative communication skills to balance the competing demands of styling, aerodynamics, and cost.
Work Environment Primary Environment:
This position is primarily based in a professional office environment, utilizing a dedicated high-performance CAD workstation.
Secondary Environments:
Occasional exposure to manufacturing plant floors, prototyping labs, and testing facilities where safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, and hearing protection may be required.
