Job Summary:
The new business development design lead designs parts & undertakes R&D that expands business to new customers, and/or expands portfolio within a specific customer base.
Essential Functions:
Benchmark existing vehicles to understand what new technologies or types of parts maximize value. Sketch and create rough models for new product concept pitches. Work with marketing to create general slide decks and content for customer pitches. Research and understand existing patents to understand design constraints. Ensure that designs avoid existing patents, and work to include patentable features in new designs. Keep up-to-date with newest material technology to maximize the potential of new part designs. Research and develop new supplier technologies to increase company capabilities. Keep up-to-date with industry news to ensure new designs are targeted at customer needs. Perform market research to understand competitor & customer environment. Utilize CAE (strength: FEA and plastic flow: Moldflow) to ensure design meets all functional and manufacturing requirements. Provide customer design support through meetings, hand sketches, drawings, and data transfer. Occasional travel offsite to visit customers. Contact customers regularly to check in on recent needs and deepen relationships. Occasional tech show presentations to customers. Work with Sales and Costing teams to understand cost drivers of parts during quote to maximize quote competitiveness and avoid misunderstandings before kickoff. Work with Production and Purchasing teams to ensure new designs are manufacturable and profitable. Provide regular progress reports and customer meeting minutes. Communicate with other branches to share R&D and understand opportunities for growth. Other duties as specified by Director of Design.
Education:
Must have a Bachelor of Engineering degree or equivalent degree or experience.
Skills/Experience/Requirements:
5 to 10 years of previous experience as a design engineer or sales engineer. 3 years of experience with Nifco U.S. procedures and customers is preferred. Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Strong interpersonal/communication skills to interact effectively with customers and other Nifco personnel. Strong knowledge of CATIA and familiarity with SolidWorks, Moldflow, CAE preferred. Strong knowledge of injection molding and manufacturing methods preferred. Willing to travel and work via occasional overnight trips. Ability to multitask effectively. Work effectively in a team environment. Licensed driver with a safe driving record.
Pay:
$75,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
