Job Description

Applicants must be fluent in both English and Spanish and have experience providing medical interpretation in a healthcare setting.
JOB SUMMARY
As a Medical Interpreter, you play a vital role in ensuring patients and families receive the compassionate, equitable care they deserve. Every day, you serve as a trusted communication bridge between healthcare providers and limited English proficient (LEP) patients and families, helping them understand diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, and important healthcare decisions. In this fast-paced hospital environment, you'll work alongside physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary care teams to facilitate accurate and culturally sensitive interpretation while supporting positive patient experiences. Whether assisting during routine appointments, emergency situations, family meetings, or discharge planning, you help patients feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout their care journey. Success in this role requires exceptional consecutive and simultaneous interpreting proficiency as well as medical terminology knowledge, professionalism, empathy, and a commitment to accuracy. You will also provide translation of written medical materials and ensure all communication meets healthcare interpreting standards, patient privacy regulations, and organizational expectations. SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Fluency in foreign language(s).
  • Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
  • Ability to precisely and accurately translate medical information from English to the patient's native language.
  • Good interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • Foreign language(s) written translation skills.
  • Listening skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to interact and connect with people over the telephone, often in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's Degree
  • Interprets with a high degree of accuracy and completeness in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes
  • Previous experience in healthcare
  • Fluent in English/Spanish including medical terminology in both languages
  • Experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook
  • Experience using mobile devices such as iPad, tablets, and pagers and Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Certification from an accredited medical interpreter program
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or National Board of Certification of Medical Interpreters The current salary range for this position is $24.
26 to $33.36 Rady Children's Hospital is committed to compensation that is externally competitive and internally equitable. We demonstrate this commitment by conducting regular market reviews to remain competitive with organizations of similar size in the nonprofit, healthcare sector. The range listed above does not represent the full salary range for the position but is the expected hiring range for qualified candidates. Compensation decisions consider a variety of factors including experience, education, licensure, unique skillsets, organizational need, and internal equity.
