Job Overview We are seeking a dynamic and highly skilled American Sign Language (ASL) Afterschool Instructor to create an engaging, inclusive environment teaching sign language basics, vocabulary, and Deaf culture to students. Key responsibilities include creating lesson plans, implementing interactive games/activities, ensuring child safety, and facilitating communication with peers, often supporting deaf/hard-of-hearing students. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for bridging communication gaps, demonstrate professional ethics, have a strong command of American Sign Language (ASL) and enjoy working with students attending elementary school.

Key Responsibilities Instruction:

Teach ASL basics, fingerspelling, and numbers through interactive games, songs, and storytelling.

Curriculum Development:

Design and implement engaging, developmentally appropriate lesson plans.

Cultural Awareness:

Introduce students to Deaf culture and community norms.

Supervision:

Ensure student safety during in-person activities.

Communication:

Foster an inclusive environment, enabling communication between hearing and deaf/hard-of-hearing peers.

Administration:

Manage daily attendance, report progress to administration, and communicate with parents.

Culture:

Ensure cultural competency by understanding and respecting the cultural nuances of both deaf and hearing communities.

Experience ASL Proficiency:

Proven experience as an ASL Interpreter or ASL Instructor with demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language.

Experience:

Previous experience working with school-age children (typically ages 4-11).

Skills:

Strong classroom management, patience, and ability to make learning fun.

Background:

Familiarity with or belonging to the Deaf community is highly valued. Common Job Requirements Reliability and punctuality. Ability to work independently, leading a classroom. Passion for language and cultural education. Background check will be required in accordance with the county and state rules. Ideal candidate should be comfortable with teaching in virtual and in-person settings. Primary work location takes place in-person - at a local school.
