Administrative Director of Exceptional Children Services, Preschool and Mental Health Services/English Language Learner (ELL) Coordinator
BASIC FUNCTION
The Language Interpreter/Translator must have completed high school or have a GED as well as being proficient in the required language. Assists teachers in fulfilling the goals of the second language program by providing the appropriate language instruction/interpretation to the students assigned to such classes. Assists in the implementation of education programs by aiding students in the access of academic core content.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Among the duties which may be performed by a Language Interpreter/Translator pertaining to a non-English speaking student are to: Be able to interpret abstract language meanings. Communicate with the student's teacher(s) in order to fully understand the child's academic needs. Translate class lectures and assignments with proficiency. Assist student in understanding and completing homework. Translate to English permission slips, report cards, progress reports, and all other notes, papers, and forms to be signed by parents. Translate and interpret all notes written by parents and sent to school. Help enroll new non-English speaking students in school. Translate between parents and teachers during in-school meetings. Make telephone calls to the student's home to speak with a parent or guardian if and when necessary and requested by a teacher, principal, or supervisor. Make a home visit in the instance that no other means of communication is available, in the event of an emergency, yet only in the company of another school system employee. Provides appropriate language instruction to students under the supervision of the certified classroom teacher. Assists teachers, parents and local school personnel in fulfilling instructional goals of the second language program. Provides instruction, counseling, appropriate learning materials and experiences for the participants and provides continuous evaluation of students' progress and achievement. Plans and implements parent and child interactions and activities. Maintains accurate records on the program and provides data to appropriate personnel. Plans regularly with staff and participates in appropriate school meetings and activities. Complies with policies, rules and regulations of the School District and of any state and/or federal regulatory agency where appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Culture of students for which services are being implemented. Curriculum addressed of assigned students. Federal and state regulations governing the services of ELL students. Support services for ELL families within the system and/or community.
Ability to:
Assist assigned students with class assignments, homework, and translation of languages pertinent to student grade level. Comply with district policy and procedures related to employee responsibilities and expectations. Attend to responsibilities on a regular and minimally interrupted basis.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or G.E.D. Demonstrated proficiency in two (2) languages, English and the appropriate language. Experience in working with children and parents with special needs, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds. Knowledge of or receptive to philosophy, policy and methodology of the U.S. educational system. Experience in teaching multi-age groups. Salary Table 3 Board Approved 03/15/11
