Part Time Foreign Language Interpreter Department:
Health Hiring Range:
$21.54 -$25.86 per hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This position provides Spanish/Hmong interpretation services for patients with no or limited English proficiency for preventative and acute health care to improve their health and family well being as well as interpreting for English speaking medical providers during visits, appointments, and community outreach. Position requires approximately 19 hours of work per workweek.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To successfully perform this position, an individual must be able to perform the following: Interprets for Spanish/Hmong-speaking patients and the Health Department's medical providers and staff by translating conversations, forms, test results, evaluations, and other documents from English to Spanish/Hmong and Spanish/Hmong to English Provides relevant information to Spanish/Hmong-speaking patients such as providing directions for appointments Provides Spanish/Hmong interpretation and language-access support during community outreach events, health education activities, mobile clinics, and other off-site services, including assisting participants with navigating available programs and resources Calls and assists patients in scheduling appointments, planning visits, and arranging transportation Performs other duties as required or assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED At least one (1) to three (3) years of experience in interpreting and translating English and the required foreign language in a setting requiring knowledge of programs or services necessary to develop the knowledge and skill to work in this position
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, AND OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES
: Standard vision requirements, with or without corrective lenses Occasionally lifts up to ten (10) pounds Occasionally spends time sitting and engaging in repetitive motions Routinely spends time reaching with hands and arms Frequently spends time standing, walking, speaking or hearing, and using hands and fingers to handle, feel, type, or text Must be able to express and exchange ideas through verbal communications Must be able to prepare and analyze written or computer data Must be able to observe general surroundings and activities Subjected to some mental effort and stress Occasional exposure to some disagreeable elements (i.e., dust, heat, fumes, cold, or noise) Individuals are occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, breathing apparatuses, and bloodborne pathogens
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
: Proficient in spoken and written English and Spanish/Hmong Ability to convey detailed instructions loudly, accurately, and/or quickly Ability to receive detailed instructions or information through verbal communication Ability to recognize information at normal and spoken word levels Ability to operate and use systems, technologies, motor vehicles, and machines required to perform duties of this position Ability to select, evaluate, interpret, and apply data from several sources, such as guidelines, policies, and procedures Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
