Summary:
An interpreter is the consummate storyteller; knowledgeable, approachable, passionate, fun, thought-provoking, dynamic and inclusive. Led by the mission and vision of the Ohio History Connection, the interpreter will guide visitors in their exploration of the historic sites and museums through guided tours, and by leading formal and informal programming and activities that help visitors spark a personal connection to Ohio History. This position will be specifically aiding in field trips and group experiences at the Newark Earthworks and Flint Ridge in Licking County, Ohio. Field trips are typically conducted Monday-Wednesday 9:00am-2:00pm. Most field trip activity occurs during September, October, and November and again during mid-March, April, and May. This is an intermittent position. Work opportunities are offered based on operational need and scheduled programming. Hours and work schedules will vary, and there is no guarantee of hours, frequency of work, or ongoing assignments.
Essential Functions:
Aid in the facilitation of educational hands-on activities for students in grades 3-5. Create a positive and fun environment for visitors of all ages and backgrounds by being hospitable, approachable and engaging. Encourage visitor participation in impromptu and planned programming and interactions. Initiate dialogue with visitors and answer questions to promote curiosity and relevance. Communicate and collaborate regularly with colleagues to improve team effectiveness. Assist in deepening the organization's relationship with volunteers by working alongside them in day-to-day tasks, programming, and interpretive training. Assist with the implementation of emergency procedures when necessary to ensure safety of visitors, colleagues, and the site. Other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience:
Must be over 16 and a) have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school or b) completed a formal vocational training, or c) be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. 0-3 years' experience working with members of the public in a service, retail, or educational capacity.
Desired Skills & Experience:
Experience interacting with school-aged children. Excellent presentation skills An educational course or training in one of the following areas: Education, American history, Archaeology, Art history, Museum studies, Geography, Geology, Natural resources, Interpretation, or other relevant topics related to archeological and historical sites and museums.
Required Competencies:
Can locate and use resources to get things done, uses resources effectively and efficiently, and arranges information in a useful manner. Assumes accountability of role and responsibilities; anticipates the needs of others. Able to process information in a consistent manner, simultaneously displaying adaptability when necessary. Able to carry out duties assigned by supervisor
Work Environment:
The site is located outdoors and applicants may be exposed to all types of weather conditions. Position will require applicants to move through mowed grass and trails through a wooded area. Ground surface can be uneven
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift 20lbs Must be able to walk 0.5 miles over uneven terrain. Must be able to stand for an extended period.
