Job Description
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
High School Diploma or GED; Associates Degree or higher preferred. Current, valid South Dakota certificate for interpreters from the SD Department of Human Services, National Certification preferred.
Experience:
Two years interpreting preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination. Significant use of hands and upper body. Frequent standing, walking, speaking, bending, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, stooping, and turning. Some keyboarding and writing. Must have use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact as defined by the ability to see, read, talk, and hear. Some lifting up to 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
Other Requirements:
Must be fluent in American Sign Language. Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, and problem solving skills. Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, email, and internet. Ability to keep information confidential.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES
Interpret all content and special subject areas for deaf or hard of hearing students as deemed necessary by students' Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Provide related assistance to teachers when appropriate.
Interpret school related activities outside the classroom and school day.
Interpret interactions of deaf students with staff and students.
Serves as a language role model, encourages self-advocacy and independence for deaf students.
Prepares for all interpreting assignments to ensure accuracy of material presented.
Serve as a resource for staff regarding the role of interpreters.
Promotes cultural understanding of the hearing impaired.
Attends required meetings.
Prepares reports as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
