Spanish Translator Interpreter

Job Description

General Responsibilities:
The Spanish Translator/Interpreter provides accurate, timely, and culturally responsive Spanish-English translation and interpretation services to support communication between SCCDC staff, children, families, and community partners. This position helps ensure Spanish-speaking families have meaningful access to SCCDC programs, services, information, and resources. The Spanish Translator/Interpreter will provide both written translation and verbal interpretation as needed and will maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and respect when working with families and staff.

Executive Director or Designee Minimum Educational/Certification Qualifications:
Fluency in both Spanish and English, including strong verbal and written communication skills, is required. The candidate must have the ability to accurately interpret spoken communication and translate written materials between Spanish and English. A high school diploma is required. Previous experience in the following areas is preferred: professional translation or interpretation services; working with children and families; early childhood, education, healthcare, or social services settings; and familiarity with terminology related to early childhood development, special education, early intervention, and developmental services.
Essential Duties:
Provide Spanish-English and English-Spanish interpretation for meetings, appointments, conferences, evaluations, screenings, and other SCCDC activities as needed. Translate written materials including family communications, forms, notices, educational materials, program information, and other documents. Facilitate communication while allowing the appropriate SCCDC staff member to provide explanations, recommendations, and advice. Assist staff with communication when language barriers exist between SCCDC and Spanish-speaking children and families. Translate information accurately while maintaining the intended meaning, tone, and context of the original communication. Interpret conversations accurately and impartially without adding, omitting, or altering information or inserting personal opinions. Review translated materials for accuracy, clarity, grammar, and appropriate terminology. Communicate questions or concerns regarding translations to the appropriate staff member. Support effective communication with Spanish-speaking families regarding SCCDC programs, services, schedules, policies, and resources. Assist families in understanding information related to developmental services, preschool, early intervention, and other SCCDC services. Help create a welcoming and inclusive environment for Spanish-speaking families. Assist staff in communicating with families by phone, in person, electronically, or through written correspondence. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding children, families, employees, and organizational information. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries when working with children, families, staff, and community partners. Maintain accurate documentation related to translation and interpretation services as required. Provide culturally responsive communication and interpretation while recognizing and respecting differences in family backgrounds, perspectives, and communication styles. Manage multiple priorities associated with the requirements of the job while maintaining an effective and efficient work schedule. Must follow all policies and procedures of the Sweetwater County Child Developmental Center (SCCDC). Must attend staff meetings, team meetings, training, and other required meetings on time and as scheduled. This includes fundraising events, open house, and parent/teacher conferences. Must be willing to perform other duties as assigned.
Skills Required:
Ability to interact in a positive and effective manner with a wide variety of people including children, parents, families, staff members, and community members in order to promote positive relationships within the work setting and community. Must be reliable, organized and detail oriented to maintain an effective and efficient schedule. Must have strong oral and written communication skills in order to interact effectively with a wide variety of people. Must maintain a high level of confidentiality relative to all matters at SCCDC. General computer skills, including in-depth knowledge of Google Docs, Sheets, etc. Must respect the cultural diversity and dignity of others and treat them with fairness and courtesy. Must be willing to serve on SCCDC sponsored committees. Ability to learn new procedures, laws, and software, as needed. Ability to work in a collaborative work environment. Represent SCCDC in a professional manner.
Physical/Environmental Requirements:
Must be able to work in a variety of positions, including but not limited to: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, sitting, etc. Must be able to sit on the floor for extended periods when necessary. Must be able to lift 35 lbs. unassisted. Must be able to tolerate air conditioned buildings and fluorescent lights. Must be able to work effectively in a stressful environment. Must be able to hear and process ordinary conversation, telephone conversation, and quiet sounds with or without aid. Must be able and willing to drive to meet job requirements. Must be able to operate and use equipment necessary to perform essential functions of the job. Must be able to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through electronic communication.
