Our services include project management, pre-wire assistance, system startups, site surveys, programming, system integration, end-user training, and maintenance. We work closely with electrical contractors, manufacturers, building owners, and facility managers to ensure lighting control systems are installed correctly, operate reliably, and perform as designed. We pride ourselves on our technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to delivering high-quality service. Position Overview Control Force is seeking a motivated, technically proficient Lighting Controls Field Service Technician to join our growing team. This is a hands-on, field-based position focused on the startup, programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and servicing of lighting control systems throughout the New York City metropolitan area, with occasional travel to other project locations. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of electrical systems, an aptitude for technology, and the ability to troubleshoot complex problems independently. Experience with lighting controls, building automation, or low-voltage control systems is highly desirable. We are looking for someone who can do more than follow instructions. The right candidate should be curious, resourceful, organized, and comfortable taking ownership of technical challenges from diagnosis through resolution. Key Responsibilities System Startup & Commissioning Perform initial startup, configuration, programming, and commissioning of lighting control systems. Verify proper installation, wiring, addressing, communication, and functionality of control equipment. Configure occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting, timeclock schedules, dimming zones, keypads, and lighting scenes. Test and validate system operation against project drawings, specifications, and customer requirements. Coordinate with electrical contractors and project managers to resolve installation deficiencies. Troubleshooting & Technical Service Diagnose and resolve issues involving lighting control hardware, software, wiring, communication networks, and system programming. Troubleshoot line-voltage, low-voltage, 0-10V, phase-dimming, relay, and digitally controlled lighting systems. Investigate intermittent failures, communication issues, equipment malfunctions, and programming conflicts. Perform service visits, system modifications, equipment replacements, and software updates. Work independently to identify root causes and develop effective solutions. Programming & System Integration Configure and program manufacturer-specific lighting control platforms using proprietary software and programming tools. Establish communication between controllers, processors, sensors, interfaces, and network-connected devices. Assist with integration of lighting controls into larger building automation and management systems. Modify existing system configurations to accommodate changing customer needs. Field Coordination & Documentation Conduct site surveys to evaluate existing systems and identify equipment, installation conditions, and project requirements. Review electrical drawings, riser diagrams, control schedules, and manufacturer documentation. Coordinate with electricians, general contractors, engineers, manufacturers, and customers. Maintain accurate service reports, commissioning records, programming files, and project documentation. Provide customer training on system operation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting. Communicate project status, outstanding issues, and recommended corrective actions to internal teams. Required Qualifications Strong technical aptitude with an understanding of electrical and electronic systems. Experience troubleshooting electrical, low-voltage, automation, or electronic control equipment. Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation. Comfortable using computers, configuration software, diagnostic tools, and electronic equipment. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to troubleshoot unfamiliar systems. Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, and maintain accurate documentation. Professional communication skills when interacting with customers, contractors, and internal teams. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Ability to travel to job sites throughout the NYC metropolitan area, with occasional overnight travel. Ability to safely work on active construction sites, use ladders, and handle tools and equipment. Commitment to workplace safety and professional workmanship. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience with lighting controls, building automation, electrical commissioning, or field service. Familiarity with one or more lighting control manufacturers, including: Lutron (Vive, Athena, Quantum, HomeWorks) Acuity Brands (nLight, nLight AIR) Leviton (GreenMAX and other control platforms) Philips Dynalite ETC Casambi Pharos Wattstopper Hubbell NX Understanding of lighting control protocols and technologies such as 0-10V, DALI, DMX, and phase dimming. Background in electrical contracting, AV systems, building management systems, industrial controls, or related technical fields. Manufacturer training or certifications in lighting control systems. Experience with every listed manufacturer is not required. We value a strong technical foundation and the ability to learn new platforms over familiarity with any single product line. What We're Looking For Beyond technical experience, we're looking for someone who takes pride in solving problems. Lighting control systems often involve a combination of electrical wiring, software configuration, network communication, and manufacturer-specific technology. Successful technicians must be comfortable investigating problems that don't always have obvious solutions. Our ideal candidate is someone who: Enjoys understanding how systems work, not just making them work. Can approach unfamiliar equipment logically and methodically. Takes initiative and follows problems through to resolution. Is comfortable working independently while knowing when to collaborate. Can communicate technical issues clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences. Takes ownership of their work and represents the company professionally. Work Environment This is a full-time, field-based position serving primarily commercial projects throughout New York City and the surrounding metropolitan area. Work includes new construction, renovations, occupied commercial buildings, hospitality properties, offices, and other facilities. Some projects may require early starts, schedule flexibility, or travel outside the immediate metropolitan area. Join Control Force Control Force offers an opportunity to work with a wide variety of lighting control technologies, develop advanced technical skills, and contribute directly to the success of complex projects.
