You will be a visible presence at public meetings, on the riverbank, and in neighborhoods dealing with the practical fallout of a warming world, not just behind a desk. The stories you tell need to help readers understand what is happening to their water, their land, and their power bills, giving them information they can actually use. We want you out talking to people, listening as much as you report, and inviting feedback on the coverage itself. This role will build a strong track record covering the Flint River, extreme heat accountability, and the local effects of AI and data center growth. Responsibilities Climate and Environmental Reporting Flint River coverage: Cover the health of the Flint River and surrounding watershed, including water quality, restoration efforts, and the communities that depend on it.

Disaster and accountability reporting:

Report on extreme heat, severe weather, and disaster recovery as they affect Middle Georgia, holding officials accountable for preparedness and response.

Clean energy and development:

Track clean energy policy, utility decisions, and the growth of data centers and other energy-intensive development, and explain what these mean for ratepayers and neighborhoods.

Environmental justice:

Center the voices of communities most affected by environmental change, including those historically underserved by local news.

Multimedia Storytelling Video and social:

Produce on-screen narration and vertical video for social platforms to reach readers where they already are.

Cross-format packaging:

Use photography, data, and audio where they strengthen a story, and package coverage for both print and digital audiences. Community and Cross-Network Collaboration Source development: Build sources and relationships across Middle Georgia so coverage reflects what communities actually need to know, not just what is easiest to report.

Community listening:

Actively seek out community input through public events, social media, and direct outreach, letting what you hear shape the stories you pursue and making it visible to readers when their input shapes what you report Network coordination: Coordinate with the Columbus climate reporter and other GTLN newsrooms to share sourcing, story ideas, and lessons learned across the network.

Public records:

Use FOIA and Georgia Open Records requests to hold public agencies and utilities accountable. Minimum Qualifications Experience as a reporter covering climate, environment, or a related beat, with a portfolio that demonstrates strong writing and reporting fundamentals. Comfort producing multimedia content, including video and social storytelling. Working knowledge of public records requests and data-driven reporting. A genuine interest in Middle Georgia and the willingness to build trust in communities that may be skeptical of the press. The self-starting energy to generate story ideas independently and the collegiality to work well across a small newsroom.

Preferred :

Prior experience covering rivers, water systems, or land use, and familiarity with breaking news response.
