John Kind Studios LLC is a creative production and strategic services company serving New England and Atlanta. Our mission is "Make what needs to happen, happen." We bring together video, photography, sound, design, and storytelling to help organizations move important work forward. We are seeking a freelance Location Sound Engineer for on-site productions in Boston and the surrounding New England area. Assignments may include filmed interviews, brand stories, documentaries, educational content, and acoustic performances. This role captures clean, dependable audio during production and provides organized recordings to the editing team.

Responsibilities include:

• Assess the recording environment and identify potential sound problems.
• Select and position microphones appropriate to the subjects and setting.
• Record and monitor dialogue or live performances throughout the assignment.
• Coordinate microphone placement, framing, and recording needs with the videographer.
• Manage recording levels, room tone, sound checks, and audio continuity.
• Provide recordings suitable for synchronization with camera footage.
• Label, back up, and transfer audio files with clear handoff notes.
• Identify equipment needs, rentals, or additional costs before booking.

For interviews, assignments may require lavalier and boom microphones. Performance assignments may require a microphone setup suitable for instruments such as violin and piano.

Compensation:

$500 total for a standard production day of up to eight hours, including an agreed basic recording kit. Short assignments, overtime, specialty equipment, travel, and rentals will be scoped and priced separately before booking. This is a freelance opportunity. Project volume and hours are not guaranteed. Each assignment requires an agreed scope, fee, schedule, and payment terms. Work begins after client approval, signed agreements, and the required initial client payment. Selected personnel use the project Slack space and acknowledge direct project requests within an agreed response window.

Qualifications:

• Practical experience recording sound on location for video productions or live performances.
• Ability to capture clear dialogue and manage challenging recording environments.
• Experience with field recorders, lavalier microphones, boom microphones, and headphone monitoring.
• Understanding of recording formats, synchronization, file organization, and backups.
• Ability to deliver 24-bit/48 kHz WAV files when required.
• Dependable communication and collaboration with videographers and editors.
• Availability to work on-site in Boston and surrounding areas.

Please identify the recording equipment you can provide and any equipment you would need to rent. Experience recording acoustic instruments is especially welcome. A degree is not required.
