Job Description

Job Title:
Manufacturing Technical Writer Department:
Manufacturing Engineering /
Operations Location:
Haslet Tx - On-site, production floor
Role Type:
Contract About Our Client Our client, Stellar Energy, a Trane Technologies company, designs and builds modular cooling and energy systems for data centers, industrial facilities, and other critical infrastructure. Their production facilities fabricate and assemble large modular units that ship to job sites ready to install, and they're growing fast. Job Description This role sits between the production floor and technical documentation. You'll spend most of your time on the shop floor: standing at workstations, watching assemblers build modular cooling units, reading the engineering drawings and bills of materials, and turning what you see into clear, step-by-step work instructions that any operator can follow. This isn't a desk-only technical writing job, and it isn't a pure technician role. The right person has hands-on manufacturing or assembly experience and can write clear, visual documentation. You know what a torque spec means on the floor, you can spot when a drawing doesn't match how the part actually goes together, and you can explain it in a way a new operator gets on the first read. Duties and Responsibilities Observe assemblers and technicians at workstations to capture the real build sequence for modular cooling units and sub-assemblies Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and bills of materials (BOMs) to verify parts, quantities, and assembly order Write standardized work instructions (WIs) that are picture-heavy, step-by-step, and easy to follow at the workstation Take and edit photos, annotate images, and create callouts or simple graphics that show each step clearly Include critical details in instructions: torque values, fastener specs, quality checkpoints, safety requirements, and required tools Work with manufacturing engineers, quality, and production supervisors to validate instructions before release Run instructions with operators on the floor, collect feedback, and revise until they work in practice Update work instructions when designs, BOMs, or processes change (ECOs/ECNs) Maintain document control, version tracking, and organized storage of all work instructions Flag discrepancies between drawings, BOMs, and actual shop-floor practice to engineering Support training of new operators using the documentation you create Required Experience/Skills 3+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing, assembly, or fabrication (HVAC, mechanical, electrical, or industrial equipment preferred) Demonstrated experience writing work instructions, SOPs, assembly procedures, or similar shop-floor documentation Strong ability to read engineering drawings, blueprints, and BOMs Comfortable spending most of the day on the production floor in PPE Skilled at photographing processes and building visual, image-based instructions Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) Clear, concise writing — able to explain technical steps in plain language Detail-oriented and comfortable asking operators and engineers "why" to get the process right Nice-to-Haves Experience with HVAC, chillers, cooling systems, or modular/skid-based equipment Background as an assembler, mechanical/electrical technician, or manufacturing technician before moving into documentation Experience with work instruction or visual documentation software (e.g., SnagIt, Visual Work Instructions tools, Dozuki, Adobe Illustrator) Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and document control systems Exposure to Lean manufacturing, standard work, or
ISO 9001
quality systems Basic CAD viewing experience (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor) Education High school diploma or GED required Associate or bachelor's degree in manufacturing technology, engineering technology, technical communication, or related field preferred (equivalent hands-on experience considered) Pay & Benefits Summary Competitive pay Medical, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) with company match Paid time off and holidays Growth opportunities within a Trane Technologies company Call-to-Action If you've worked on the shop floor and you're the person everyone asks to write it down so the next guy gets it right, we want to talk to you.
