For nearly 80 years, Rodale Institute has been committed to providing education and training for the next generation of regenerative organic farmers. The Rodale Institute Farmer Training (RIFT) program and Veteran Farmer Training Program (VFTP) provide farmer training rooted in organic and regenerative organic growing principles, offering students the opportunity to learn what it takes to become a successful organic farmer in a hands-on, immersive learning environment.
RIFT/VFTP
students come from across the country to learn organic and regenerative organic growing techniques. Our goal is for them to return home, take their next steps as beginning organic farmers, and share the critical need to adopt organic agricultural practices across the US and beyond. The curriculum is designed to take individuals with little to no farming experience and prepare them to become fully capable beginning farmers. In addition to studying science and farming, students receive extensive education in agricultural budgeting and finance. Students selected for the 2027 Rodale Institute Farmer Training (RIFT/VFTP) program will undergo an intensive 35-week, hands-on educational experience that prepares them for a career in organic agriculture, running from 3/8/2027 to 11/5/2027. Throughout the growing season, students gain firsthand experience in basic farming skills, along with classroom instruction and field trips covering the many aspects of organic agriculture. Field tasks include growing and maintaining vegetables, grains, fruits, and other perennial systems. To graduate, students are required to attend all classroom sessions and off-site farm visits, complete all classroom assignments, and pass all quarterly exams.
Expectations of students:
