Fort Ticonderoga is committed to an authentic and engaging visitor experience in all facets of its public programs and uses its landscape, structures, exhibits, and collections to educate its visitors about the site's remarkable history. In support of this commitment to preservation and education, Fort Ticonderoga will be hiring two Catalogers, who will play a vital role in Fort Ticonderoga's two-year NEH funded project to catalog and make accessible Revolutionary-era objects across three core collections.
The three collections are:
the newly acquired Robert Nittolo Collection, which is comprised of 3,000 objects of military material culture between the mid-17th century and the end of the American Revolution, including fine and decorative arts, weapons, and accoutrements; the rare book collection, which contains over 3,000 books, mostly dating from the 18th through early 20th centuries, and covering many aspects of 18th-century history and North American and European military theory and practice; and the Mars Education Center Archaeological Collections, excavated between 1999 and 2006, includes personal items, military equipment, and architectural fragments that illuminate life at the fort from the French and Indian War through the American Revolution. The goals of this NEH project are to complete the cataloging and digitization of the three collections in order to facilitate access and make the objects discoverable in the museum's online database. To achieve this, the Catalogers will work with the Collections team to document, catalog, photograph, and rehouse the over 1,300 objects that remain to be cataloged in The Robert Nittolo Collection. They will produce multiple high-quality photographs of each object to fully document the collection and share it through Ticonderoga's publicly accessible collections database. The catalogers will also assist with cataloging and making accessible Ticonderoga's rare book collection. They will work on creating records for the roughly 2,500 books that remain to be added to Ticonderoga's collections database and produce photographs to document the collection. Catalogers may also be asked to assist with cataloging artifacts from the Mars Education Center Archaeological Collections that remain to be added to the collections database. The successful candidates' background, experiences, and interests will help inform the type of objects they are assigned. Reporting to the Collections Manager, the Catalogers will collaborate closely with the project team to maintain consistency across standards, sustain quality control at scale, and publish new and enhanced records to Fort Ticonderoga's online database. The Catalogers will participate in weekly project meetings, contribute to workflow refinements, and help the team meet a two-year timeline aligned to the 250th anniversary of American Independence. This work directly supports research, interpretation, and education by making collections accessible to scholars, educators, students, and the public.
