This is a unique part-time teaching opportunity for an artist, maker, designer, educator, or creative professional who loves working with children and wants the freedom to create innovative learning experiences. They work out their own fully equipped full-floor innovation lab/atelier.
Schedule:
Mondays tru Friday, 1:00-3:00 PM Approximately 20 work hours per week including paid prep time (just two classes of 12 students each, one art/maker class is TK-Kindergarten, other 1st-3rd Grade). UP Academy is a Reggio-inspired, global, project-based TK-5 school built around a simple idea: children learn deeply when they are given meaningful opportunities to explore, create, experiment, and bring their ideas to life. We are small by design, global in vision, and deeply committed to creativity and personalized learning. What You'll Do The Art & Maker Teacher will lead engaging afternoon experiences for elementary students that combine art, design, imagination, experimentation, and hands-on construction . Depending on the project and the interests of the students, an afternoon might include: Painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, or printmaking Building with cardboard, wood, fabric, recycled materials, and loose parts Designing and prototyping inventions Sewing, weaving, textiles, and fiber arts Clay and three-dimensional work Creating props, signs, models, costumes, or installations Exploring simple tools and construction techniques Turning recycled or everyday materials into something new Designing solutions to real-world problems Helping students create products for schoolwide projects, exhibitions, markets, performances, or community events Supporting students as they pursue their own creative ideas and passion projects We aren't looking for someone to lead students through identical crafts where everyone's final product looks the same. We want students to imagine, experiment, make choices, solve problems, revise their ideas, and create something that feels genuinely theirs. A Different Kind of Art & Maker Program At UP Academy, the arts are not an extra added onto the school day. Making is part of how children learn. Students might design a storefront as part of a project about their community, create prototypes for a new invention, sew a product they hope to sell, build a model of an imagined city, create artwork for an exhibition, construct scenery for a performance, or spend several weeks developing an idea that began with a simple question. The Art & Maker Teacher will have significant freedom to develop experiences that connect artistic expression, craftsmanship, engineering, design thinking, and student curiosity. Our goal isn't to tell students exactly what to make. It's to give them the materials, skills, inspiration, and confidence to discover what they can make. Our Reggio-Inspired Approach UP Academy draws inspiration from the Reggio Emilia belief that children have many different languages for expressing their thinking . A child might communicate an idea through words, drawing, sculpture, movement, construction, photography, dramatic play, or design. We want our creative spaces to invite that kind of exploration. Teachers observe what students are interested in, introduce compelling materials and techniques, ask thoughtful questions, and help children take their ideas further. Student work — including sketches, prototypes, experiments, mistakes, revisions, and finished creations — can also become documentation of the learning process and part of our school environment. Who We're Looking For You might be a wonderful fit if you: Love making things and sharing that enthusiasm with children Believe creativity is something every child can develop Enjoy art that is exploratory rather than overly prescriptive Are comfortable with a room that can occasionally get wonderfully messy Can teach children how to use materials and tools safely and independently Enjoy asking, "What do you think you could try?" instead of immediately giving students the answer Can balance creative freedom with clear expectations and routines Enjoy working with elementary-aged students at different developmental levels Are excited by project-based and interdisciplinary learning See mistakes, failed prototypes, and unexpected results as part of the creative process Enjoy collaborating with classroom teachers on larger school projects Are reliable, warm, flexible, and comfortable working in a small-school environment Experience teaching elementary art, maker education, STEAM, design, woodworking, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, engineering, or other creative disciplines is welcomed. A traditional art-teaching background is not required if you have strong creative skills, experience working successfully with children, and excitement about helping young people make things. Artists, designers, craftspeople, makers, architects, engineers, educators, and other creative professionals are encouraged to apply. Why This Role Is Different Because UP Academy is small, this position offers something difficult to find in a traditional school setting: the opportunity to know students well and develop ambitious creative projects without managing hundreds of students each week. You'll be joining a school where: Classes and learning groups are intentionally small Teachers have significant creative freedom Student ideas can shape the direction of a project Art and making can connect directly with classroom learning Projects can unfold over multiple sessions rather than being rushed into a single class period Teachers are encouraged to experiment with new approaches Children are trusted with meaningful tools, materials, and responsibilities Creative work is valued as an essential part of learning This could be an especially good fit for someone who wants to teach and inspire children without taking on a traditional full-time teaching schedule. About UP Academy UP Academy is a small TK-5 school committed to creating an educational experience that is deeply personal, intellectually ambitious, creative, and connected to the real world. Our students participate in schoolwide term projects, individual Self-Discovery projects, mixed-age learning, leadership opportunities, and hands-on experiences in their community. Our goal is not simply for children to learn information. We want them to become people who can imagine, create, collaborate, communicate, solve problems, pursue their interests, and turn an idea into something real. UP Academy prohibits discrimination based on race (including traits historically associated with race, including, but not limited to, hair texture and protective hairstyles), color, creed, gender (including transgender, gender identity and gender expression), religion, marital status, registered domestic partner status, age, national origin or ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition, pregnancy, genetic information, sexual orientation, or any other consideration made unlawful by federal, state, or local laws.
