POSITION OVERVIEW

(VOLUNTEER / UNPAID) Western Covenant University, a non-profit private Christian university, is seeking passionate Volunteer ESL Academic Instructors to facilitate weekly academic support circles for international undergraduate and graduate students across our Los Angeles, Placentia, and Torrance campuses. Many of our international transfer students need supplemental English language support to succeed in their university studies. Because our students cannot afford additional class costs after paying full university tuition, WCU provides these support sessions completely free of charge through our community volunteer initiative.

ROLE DETAILS

Position Type:

Unpaid Volunteer Opportunity Commitment:

1.5 to 3 hours per week for an 8- to 10-week term

Schedule:

Flexible morning, afternoon, or early evening slots available

Locations:

In-person at our Los Angeles, Placentia, or Torrance campuses

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilitate small-group academic language labs (90-minute weekly sessions). Help international students review university reading materials, course syllabi, and academic vocabulary. Facilitate engaging English conversation and academic comprehension practice using provided study guides and vocabulary frameworks. Foster a warm, supportive, and culturally encouraging learning environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Strong command of spoken and written English. A heart for serving international students and supporting non-profit higher education.

Preferred:

Background in TESOL/TEFL, tutoring, adult education, or teaching (ideal for graduate students seeking practical hours, retired educators, or community mentors).

Lesson outlines, vocabulary lists, and study materials are provided by the Academic Affairs department—no complex lesson planning required!
