Storm Lake High School Athletic Coach Job Description Position Title:
High School Athletic Coach
Reports To:
Athletic Director Position Summary
The High School Athletic Coach plans, organizes, and supervises a high school interscholastic athletic program that supports student-athlete development, safety, teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic success. The coach serves as a positive role model and complies with all district, conference, and Iowa licensure requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and conduct effective practices and competitions.
Teach sport-specific skills, strategies, and rules.
Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and respect.
Ensure the safety and supervision of student-athletes at all times.
Enforce school and district policies and athletic codes of conduct.
Communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, and school staff.
Support academic expectations and eligibility requirements.
Maintain equipment and facilities.
Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development.
Follow all district, conference, and state athletic association rules.
Required Licensure
All coaches (paid or volunteer) must hold a valid Iowa Coaching Authorization or Coaching Endorsement through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BoEE).
Minimum requirements include:
At least 18 years of age and a high school diploma or equivalent
CPR certification
NFHS concussion training
Mandatory reporter training
Completion of an approved 55-hour coaching course (or equivalent coursework)
Authorization must remain current and in good standing.
Qualifications
Knowledge of the sport and coaching techniques
Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills
Ability to work positively with high school students
Coaching experience preferred, but not required
Commitment to student safety and well-being
Physical & Work Requirements
Ability to demonstrate skills and actively supervise students
Ability to lift and manage athletic equipment
Evening, weekend, and outdoor work required
