Job Description

Director of Training / Coach We're looking for one more team member to help us change lives on the daily!! Could it be you?? Continued growth and demand has us searching for a Director of Training to join our team.
First things first:
we're not a normal gym or personal training studio — we look at things a little differently. And this isn't a normal personal training job either. We're looking for someone who loves coaching and helping people, but also wants the opportunity to lead, develop, and manage a team of coaches and play an important role in the continued growth of Shelby Trained. If you believe in collaborative efforts and would love being part of a successful health, fitness, and performance team — this could be for you. The right person must be client-centric, enjoy spending time with people of all ages, and love being the "bright" spot in someone's day. They also need to be a leader — someone who holds themselves to a high standard and can help the people around them do the same. You might be a great fit if: You genuinely love helping people (even when they call you bad names). You have at least 2 years of professional experience in the health, fitness, performance, or related field. You're reliable, punctual, and accountable. You have a passion for health, fitness, and performance. You communicate well — both written and verbal. You have exceptional attention to detail. You enjoy teaching, mentoring, and developing others. You're comfortable having difficult conversations when necessary. You can hold people accountable without losing sight of the person. You're willing to jump in and help rather than saying, "That's not my job." You're excited about helping a company grow. You believe the whole is greater than the sum of its parts — because you'll be part of a team. Who We Are Shelby Trained is a small, local business — much different than a big-box gym or franchise. The community and environment we've built over the last 18+ years is much more like a family than simply a business transaction. Our clients stay for years. We want our team members to as well. For this position, we're looking for someone with a minimum of 2 years of professional experience in the health, fitness, performance, or related field. A related college degree and industry certifications are certainly helpful, but they're not the only things we're looking at. Experience matters. But so does the person. We're looking for someone who has an attention to detail, holds themselves to the highest standard, enjoys learning, and shows up every day ready to make both our clients and our team better. What Does Leadership Look Like at Shelby Trained? We're probably a little different here too. Leadership at Shelby Trained isn't about a title, sitting behind a desk, or simply telling other people what to do. It's about setting the standard. We believe our leaders should be willing to do what they ask of everyone else. They coach. They communicate. They solve problems. They give feedback. They accept feedback. They hold people accountable. And when something needs to get done, they're willing to roll up their sleeves and help get it done. As our Director of Training, you'll be expected to: Lead by example. Your own coaching, preparation, communication, and attention to detail should set the standard for the rest of the training team. Develop people. Your job isn't just to identify what's wrong — it's to help coaches get better. Hold the standard. Great culture doesn't mean avoiding difficult conversations. You'll be expected to address issues directly, respectfully, and early. Take ownership. When there's a problem within the training department, we don't spend much time figuring out whose fault it is. We figure out how to solve it. Be part of the team. Leadership doesn't put you above the work. Sometimes you're coaching, sometimes you're teaching, sometimes you're managing — and sometimes you're helping with whatever needs to be done. Make decisions based on the individual. Whether it's a client or a coach, we don't believe everyone needs the exact same thing. Good leadership requires understanding the person in front of you. Ultimately, we want someone who can make the people around them better while continuing to get better themselves. So...what does a Director of Training actually do? Well, other than being a superhero to our clients every day... You'll coach. Approximately 15 hours per week will be hands-on coaching , which may include: In-person coaching Remote/virtual coaching Consulting with athletic programs and businesses House calls Functional Movement Mapping, Micro-Mapping, and assessments Consultations and strategy sessions Our clientele ranges from active-aging adults to competitive athletes. Our adult population is primarily 50-80 years old, while our athletes are generally 12-22. Our business is approximately 70% adults and 30% athletes. You'll also lead. This is where the Director part comes in. You'll be responsible for the day-to-day management and development of approximately 4-5 full- and part-time coaches .
That includes helping:
Ensure every training session meets Shelby Trained's standards. Manage coaching schedules, staffing, and coverage. Coach, mentor, and develop our training staff. Onboard and develop new coaches. Observe sessions and provide feedback. Lead weekly coach development and training. Hold coaches accountable to established standards and expectations. Make sure client notes, communication, and follow-up happen when they're supposed to. Identify problems before they become bigger problems. Help create an exceptional and consistent client experience regardless of which coach is running the session. You won't be doing this alone. The Director of Training reports to our General Manager and works closely with the rest of our leadership and client-success team. You'll oversee the training product. Our programming and assessment systems are a huge part of what makes Shelby Trained different. You'll help oversee: Client programming across in-person, hybrid, and remote training. Individual modifications and adjustments. Integration of physician, physical therapist, chiropractor, and other medical recommendations. Programming around injuries, rehab, travel, outside activities, and individual client needs. Our movement-based assessment process. Training and developing coaches on assessment and programming standards. Remote programming and communication through Strong Coach. Our goal isn't simply to give people workouts. It's to understand the person in front of us and make better decisions for them. That same philosophy applies to how you'll manage our coaches. What you WON'T have to do Like I mentioned above, this isn't a "normal" personal training position. You won't be responsible for finding your own clients. You won't be trying to sell training packages on the gym floor. You won't have to build an independent book of business. And you won't be writing random workouts from scratch every day. Instead, you'll step into an established company, systems, clientele, and team — and help us continue to make all of them better. Compensation, Hours & Benefits This is a leadership position with a combination of hands-on coaching and management/administrative responsibilities . Compensation will be based on experience, qualifications, and responsibilities and will include: Competitive compensation Performance-based bonuses Paid Time Off Health insurance with a portion paid by Shelby Trained Company-provided continuing education Professional development and leadership opportunities Opportunity to grow and evolve as Shelby Trained grows No regular weekend schedule Clean, professional, and updated performance training facility And the miscellaneous perks that come with doing an exceptional job — coffee, lunches, gift cards, and more! Some early-morning and afternoon/evening availability will be necessary based on client and staffing needs. One last thing... We're not looking to simply fill a position. We'll hire the right person the day we find them. We're looking for someone who wants responsibility, enjoys being part of a team, cares deeply about people, and wants to help us continue building something special. If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you. To Apply Along with your resume, answer these three questions: 1. What was the last book you read, and what was your biggest takeaway from it? 2. We believe the weight room teaches life lessons. What's one of the best life lessons you've learned, and who or what taught it to you? 3. We believe one of the most important jobs of a leader is to make the people around them better. Tell us about a time you did that. What did you do, and what did you learn from the experience?
