Lead Player Development Coach

Job Description

Valley Sports Academy (VSA) is seeking a passionate, high-energy hockey leader to join our growing hockey department as the Lead Player Development Coach . This role is designed for a motivated coach who thrives in player development environments and wants to help build one of the Midwest's premier hockey training academies. The Lead Player Development Coach will play a major role in designing and delivering elite-level hockey development programming for youth and adult athletes. This position focuses heavily on player skill development, practice planning, coach leadership, and on-ice instruction while also collaborating closely with the Director of Hockey Operations on organizational growth and program design. VSA's mission is to provide athletes with the most comprehensive, in-depth training experience to help them reach their next level. Key Responsibilities Player Development & On-Ice Coaching
  • Lead on-ice instruction across VSA hockey programming, including: o Various Skills Programs o Camps and Clinics o Learn to Play/Learn to Skate o Guardians Spring Hockey Programs o Small Group Development Sessions o Private Lessons o Off-Ice Training
  • Develop age-appropriate and progression-based training plans for players ranging from beginners to advanced athletes
  • Provide high-level instruction in skating, puck skills, hockey IQ, shooting, passing, and game habits
  • Help establish and maintain VSA's overall player development philosophy and standards Practice Planning & Curriculum Development
  • Design detailed practice plans and seasonal development curricula for VSA programs
  • Create consistent development models and training progressions across all age groups
  • Collaborate with coaching staff to ensure practices align with VSA development goals and culture
  • Continuously evaluate and improve training methods and player outcomes Coach Hiring & Staff Management
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and mentoring coaches and instructors
  • Help oversee coaching assignments and staffing for programs and events
  • Maintain high standards for professionalism, communication, and player experience among the coaching staff
  • Support coach education and development initiatives within the organization Program Design & Organizational Support
  • Collaborate with the Director of Hockey Operations on: o New program development o Scheduling and logistics o Program evaluations o Organizational planning o Hockey department initiatives
  • Assist with player evaluations and placement recommendations
  • Contribute ideas to enhance VSA's reputation as a premier hockey development destination Player & Parent Experience
  • Build strong relationships with players and families
  • Promote a positive, high-energy, and development-focused culture
  • Support VSA's emphasis on community, development, and athlete experience
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with parents, athletes, and staff Qualifications
  • Strong hockey background with coaching and player development experience
  • Experience running practices, skills sessions, camps, or clinics
  • Passion for teaching and developing athletes of all ages and skill levels
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating within a team environment
  • Experience with practice planning and curriculum design preferred
  • USA Hockey coaching certifications are preferred
  • Playing experience at high school, junior, college, or professional levels preferred Work Environment
  • Part-time position with flexible scheduling based around programming needs
  • Includes evenings and weekends
