Job Description The Department of English at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English specializing in pre-1800 British literature beginning in August of the 2027-28 academic year. This is an exciting opportunity to join a department with a well-established undergraduate program in literature, creative writing, English education, and publishing.

Respon sibilities:

Teach undergraduate courses in a liberal arts context in early British literature, Shakespeare, and first-year writing, with opportunities to design courses aligned with your expertise; Carry a teaching load of 24 credits per 10-month academic year (standard courses are 4 credits); Engage in mentorship with students in the program and actively contribute to the inclusive and innovative teaching practices that define Augustana's learning environment; Contribute to departmental and college-wide conversations about writing pedagogy, AI, and writing across the curriculum; Engage in scholarly activity, with institutional support from a pre-tenure paid leave and competitive research/travel grants. What We're Looking For Expertise in pre-1800s British literature, with a doctorate or ABD in English; Enthusiasm for teaching writing and expertise in AI and writing pedagogies; Potential for and commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship; A commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and the value of a broadly educated person; Potential for continued scholarly publication in fields of interest; Ability to understand, respect and support the work of other colleagues. Position Requirements Expertise in pre-1800s British literature, with a doctorate or ABD in English Ability to teach lower-division British literature classes (including a survey of British literature, Shakespeare in Film, and a special topics class) in a liberal arts context Ability to teach advanced Shakespeare courses and an upper-level period class in the candidate's area of expertise (e.g., Medieval, Renaissance, 18th century) Experience in writing studies and AI, with ability to teach first-year writing, a composition theory class, and contribute to campus discussions about writing pedagogy Application Instructions A complete application will include: Cover letter CV Statement of teaching philosophy Copy of graduate transcripts Contact information for three references Questions about the position may be directed to search chair Meg Gillette at . Additional Information The budgeted compensation for this position ranges from $60,000 to $63,000 per year based upon minimum and preferred qualifications, education, experience, skills, and abilities. Actual placement within the range will depend upon experience, education, research, and other relevant factors.
