~20 Colleagues About the role East Bay Montessori is seeking a skilled and compassionate Learning Specialist to work directly with students aged 4•14 in a school community that serves 70 students. This person will be an essential partner to our classroom teachers, families, and school leadership, and will help to identify, understand, and support the diverse learning needs of our students. As a part-time position, this role may work together with other support staff at EBM. As a full-time position in a school of our size, this is frequently a "department" of one. The role of the Learning Specialist is to support students with different learning styles by providing intervention and remediation; support teachers in their efforts to advance students with different learning needs within the classroom; and work with parents, students, and outside professionals in order to better support students with differentiated needs. As a Montessori school, this support would happen within the framework of the Montessori method, which the ideal candidate will be familiar with and feel eager to contribute their specialized efforts toward. The Learning Specialist reports to the Head of School. Key responsibilities Identify and assess academic gaps or learning differences through observation, informal screening, and collaboration with classroom teachers Understand and interpret for general education teachers IEPs and other official documentation that the school will use to support students' learning. Observe students in the classroom setting to assess sustained focus in the general education setting Create intervention plans for students to support needs identified by teachers or to address underlying needs with direct practices Provide targeted, evidence-based intervention in one-on-one and small-group settings, with particular focus on literacy, numeracy, and executive function Recognize indicators of learning differences within the student body; communicate findings clearly and sensitively with parents and teaching staff Maintain heart-forward and frank communications with parents Collaborate with outside specialists (educational psychologists, psychotherapists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists) and coordinate referrals when appropriate Assist parents in accessing local public school Special Education services as necessary, coordinate professionals in coming on-site to observe and assess students, work with parents to support their understanding of this process Develop and maintain individualized student support plans and track progress over time Participate in student support team meetings and contribute to school-wide conversations about learning and inclusion Participate in enrollment evaluation and consideration when asked Support classroom teachers with differentiation strategies and accommodations Maintain confidential, accurate student records in compliance with school policies Other duties as necessary Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree; graduate degree in education, child development, educational therapy, or related field preferred 5+ years of experience working directly with school-age children in a support, intervention, or specialist capacity Knowledge of common learning differences and evidence-based intervention approaches (e.g., structured literacy, Orton-Gillingham, or similar frameworks) Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to discuss sensitive topics with parents and colleagues with clarity and care Collaborative, team-oriented mindset Preferred Experience in an independent or private school setting Experience with Montessori education, developmental philosophy, and materials Familiarity with standardized screening or assessment tools Training in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) or differentiated instruction Background in or familiarity with occupational therapy approaches relevant to learning Experience supporting executive function development Trauma-informed practice training What we offer A warm, mission-driven school community that values knowing each child well and using observation as a primary tool Collaborative relationships with experienced classroom teachers and school leadership Competitive compensation commensurate with experience Professional development support Paid time off and school holidays A collaborative, student-centered work environment.
