REPORTS TO
Director of Special Education
SUMMARY OF POSITION
To coordinate the implementation of Secondary Special Education programs grade 6-12 or program completion at the system, school and classroom level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master's Degree or higher with a valid certificate in Educational Leadership. 2. Successful teaching experience working with students with disabilities. 3. Administrative experience preferred. 4. Routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Possesses knowledge of special education rules and regulations. 2. Possesses mediation and conflict resolution skills. 3. Possesses administrative and leadership ability. 4. Ability to work independently and exercise professional judgment in decision-making. 5. Ability to work under pressure in meeting schedules and deadlines. 6. Excellent written and oral communication and organization skills. 7. Ability to plan and provide Professional Learning activities. 8. Possesses technology skills necessary to perform job duties and Professional Learning activities. 9. Possesses personal characteristics and professional competencies to work successfully with students, parents, teachers, administrators and the public.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
1. Works to ensure that all secondary special/regular education teachers meet IDEA compliance requirements. 2. Supports the implementation of Newton County Special Education Procedures and Georgia Rules and Regulations for Exceptional Students. 3. Works effectively with administration and special education staff in preparation of Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings and implementation of disciplinary procedures for students with disabilities. 4. Facilitates positive collaboration between parents of students with disabilities and school staff and administration. 5. Provide support in the implementation of the current curriculum being used in secondary schools. 6. Works with schools to develop schedules that ensure services are provided and FTE is maximized. 7. Works with community agencies in the support of students with disabilities. 8. Provides Professional Learning and ongoing support in the area of development of Individual Education Programs (IEP). 9. Assists in the selection of specialized materials, assistive technology and other programs at the secondary level. 10. Prepares and submits required reports as assigned by the Director of Special Education and the Georgia DOE. 11. Collaborates with Elementary Special Education Coordinator, IDEA Coordinator, Transition Specialist, and Special Education Instructional Coaches. 12. Works cooperatively with Georgia Academy for the Blind, Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, and other private facilities to ensure appropriate services. 13. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
