The Griot Dance Department is looking for a passionate, dependable dance instructor to teach on a contract basis for the 2026-2027 programmatic year. This instructor will plan and lead weekly classes for students ages three to 18 in one or more dance styles, building technical skill, confidence, and a lifelong love of dance. The role works closely with the Director of Dance and Movement and fellow teaching artists to support Griot's afterschool dance program.
Key Responsibilities:
Teach weekly dance classes in an assigned style or styles (ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, modern, creative movement, or another specialty). Prepare lesson plans aligned with the Griot Dance curriculum and National Core Arts Standards. Foster a safe, positive, and encouraging classroom environment for students of varying ages and abilities. Monitor student progress and provide regular, constructive feedback. Maintain classroom expectations and uphold studio policies. Prepare students for showcases, community events, and the annual spring recital. Attend required teacher meetings, rehearsals, and department events. Communicate regularly with the Director of Dance and Movement about attendance, student progress, and classroom needs.
Qualifications:
Experience teaching dance to children and young people. Strong technical knowledge in one or more dance disciplines. Excellent communication and classroom management skills. Reliable transportation and dependable attendance. Ability to work collaboratively with fellow teaching artists and staff. Degree or training in dance, dance education, or a related field is a plus, but not required. Experience choreographing for stage performances is a plus. CPR/First Aid certification is preferred but not required.
Work Environment:
This position is based in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and involves afternoon and evening hours during the programmatic year, with additional rehearsals and performances as scheduled. Instructors are also expected to participate in Open House, recitals, and other community performances. Because this position involves regular interaction with children and youth, employment is contingent on completion of Griot Arts' screening process, including criminal background and sex-offender registry checks.
