The Fine Arts program is central to that philosophy, offering students theatre, 2D and 3D art, ceramics, chorus, keyboard, and digital arts. Position Summary Robert F. Munroe Day School seeks a creative, organized, and mission-aligned part-time Theatre Teacher to lead our Upper School drama program. The Theatre Teacher delivers engaging instruction in our theatre course sequence, builds a supportive and disciplined ensemble culture, and directs three public performances during the school year. This is an afternoon position. The successful candidate will teach during the 12:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. instructional block Monday through Friday and will devote additional hours beyond that block to production coordination, rehearsals, technical preparation, and performances. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable teaching a sixth-grade improvisation exercise and calling cues from the booth on opening night, and sees each production as an opportunity to develop courage, compassion, leadership, and innovation in Munroe students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction and Curriculum Design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction for assigned Upper School theatre courses. Develop student performance skills through pantomime, improvisation, creative dramatics, monologue and scene work, character analysis, and ensemble exercises. Teach the fundamentals of technical theatre — scenery, properties, costumes, lighting, and sound — and instruct students in the safe operation of theatre equipment, tools, and raw materials. Build historical and cultural literacy by teaching dramatic literature from a range of genres, periods, playwrights, and traditions. Establish a rehearsal and critique culture that includes performance journals, group-generated critique criteria, peer feedback, and revision based on coaching. Create an inclusive, well-managed classroom in which students of all experience levels take creative risks and support one another. Assess student learning and provide meaningful feedback through performance rubrics, written analysis,projects, and portfolios; maintain accurate grades and attendance in FACTS. Model and enforce responsible use of copyrighted and published plays, including securing all necessary performance rights and royalties in coordination with school administration. Production Responsibilities The Theatre Teacher is expected to direct and coordinate three public performances during the school year. A typical Munroe season includes a fall production, a winter showcase or one-act festival, and a spring production; final selections are subject to approval by the Head of Upper School. Select repertoire appropriate to the age, skill level, and size of the student cast, and consistent with the mission, values, and community standards of Robert F. Munroe Day School. Secure performance rights, scripts, and scores; manage the production calendar and budget in coordination with school administration. Cast, direct, and rehearse each production, including auditions, blocking, character coaching, and technical and dress rehearsals. Coordinate all technical elements, including set construction, properties, costumes, makeup, lighting, and sound, working with student crews, parent volunteers, and contracted support as available. Supervise students during all rehearsals, load-ins, performances, and strike, ensuring safe practices in the theatre, backstage, and shop areas at all times. Promote productions through school communication channels, social media, programs, and posters, in accordance with school policy and in coordination with the school's communications efforts. Coordinate scheduling of the performance space with athletics, music, and other school programs, recognizing the shared demands of a small-school calendar. Manage the theatre inventory, including costumes, props, set pieces, and equipment; report maintenance and safety concerns promptly. Recruit and retain students in the theatre program and support enrollment growth across the Fine Arts course sequence. Collaborate with colleagues in music, visual arts, and English on interdisciplinary projects, or assembly programs, and school events. Communicate proactively and professionally with parents and guardians regarding student progress, rehearsal schedules, and production expectations. Attend faculty meetings, professional development, and school events as required for part-time instructional staff. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in theatre, education, or a related subject area from an accredited institution. Demonstrated experience directing theatrical productions with students, or comparable youth, community, or professional theatre experience. Working knowledge of technical theatre practices and stage and shop safety procedures. Strong classroom management and communication skills, with the ability to build a disciplined, inclusive ensemble. Availability to work the scheduled 12:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. block Monday through Friday, plus evenings and occasional weekends during production periods. Successful completion of a background screening and all other pre-employment requirements, including any screening required for participation in Florida scholarship programs. Preferred Master's degree in theatre, theatre education, or a related field. Florida Educator Certificate in Drama (Grades 6-12). Other state-approved coverage areas for these courses include English (6-12), Speech (6-12), Middle Grades English (5-9), Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum (5-9), and Part-Time, Non-Degreed Performing and Fine Arts. Two or more years of classroom teaching experience in theatre at the middle or high school level. Experience directing musical theatre and collaborating with music faculty or an accompanist. Experience with Florida Thespians / International Thespian Society festivals and district or state performance assessments. Credentials or experience that would support teaching dual enrollment theatre appreciation through a partner postsecondary institution.
