CDL InstructorJob Overview We are seeking a dedicated, professional, and student-focused CDL Instructor to join our team. At the heart of this position is one simple principle: students come first. We are looking for more than an experienced commercial driver. We are looking for an instructor with a servant-leader mindset —someone who understands that leadership means setting the example, meeting students where they are, holding them to a high standard, and helping them succeed. Every student who enters our program comes with a different background, learning style, experience level, and reason for pursuing a CDL. Our instructors are expected to recognize those differences and adapt their approach while maintaining the safety, professionalism, and standards required of the commercial transportation industry. The right instructor will be patient without lowering expectations, firm without being disrespectful, and willing to invest the time necessary to help students understand not only how to operate a commercial motor vehicle, but why proper procedures, sound judgment, professionalism, and safety matter. Your goal is not simply to help students pass a CDL test. Your goal is to help develop safe, confident, employable professional drivers who are prepared for what comes after graduation. Responsibilities Put the needs, development, safety, and success of students at the center of the training process Lead by example and demonstrate professionalism, patience, accountability, integrity, and respect at all times Deliver engaging classroom instruction covering traffic laws, FMCSA regulations, DOT requirements, commercial vehicle safety, defensive driving, and professional driver responsibilities Provide hands-on instruction in commercial motor vehicles, including tractor-trailers, buses, manual-transmission vehicles, and vehicles equipped with air brake systems Teach and reinforce proper pre-trip inspection procedures, vehicle control, backing maneuvers, road driving, shifting techniques, situational awareness, and safe operating practices Evaluate student performance objectively through written assessments, skills evaluations, driving demonstrations, and behind-the-wheel observation Provide clear, constructive, and individualized coaching designed to help each student improve Recognize when a student is struggling and adjust instructional methods when appropriate rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all teaching approach Maintain high training standards while creating an environment where students are comfortable asking questions, making corrections, and learning from mistakes Hold students accountable for attendance, participation, safety, attitude, preparation, and performance Maintain a safe training environment and immediately address unsafe behaviors or practices Ensure training activities remain compliant with applicable FMCSA, DOT, ELDT, and state requirements Maintain accurate student attendance, training records, evaluations, progress documentation, and required compliance records Communicate student concerns, progress, and training needs professionally with appropriate staff Stay current with changes in CDL testing procedures, FMCSA regulations, DOT standards, industry practices, and commercial driver training methods Help prepare students not only to obtain a CDL, but to successfully transition into the professional transportation industry Support fellow instructors and staff when needed while maintaining a team-first attitude Protect and care for school equipment as though it were your own What We Expect From Our Instructors A successful CDL instructor understands that knowing how to drive and knowing how to teach are two different skills. We expect our instructors to be teachers, coaches, mentors, safety professionals, and leaders. You should be willing to explain something more than once, demonstrate a skill again when necessary, change your approach when a student is not understanding, and provide encouragement without sacrificing standards. We are looking for someone who believes: The student is the reason we are here Respect must go both ways Safety is never negotiable Standards should remain high Patience is part of teaching Accountability is part of leadership Every student deserves a legitimate opportunity to succeed A good instructor does not simply point out what is wrong—they teach the student how to make it right Passing the CDL test is important, but preparing someone to safely perform the job is the greater responsibility Qualifications & Skills Strong commercial driving experience with a solid record of safe vehicle operation Thorough knowledge of tractor-trailer operation and commercial vehicle handling Knowledge of manual transmissions, air brake systems, and commercial vehicle inspections Experience with or knowledge of tanker operations and passenger/bus vehicles is highly desirable Strong understanding of traffic laws, FMCSA regulations, DOT requirements, and commercial motor vehicle safety practices Previous CDL instruction, driver training, coaching, mentoring, or adult education experience is strongly preferred Ability to communicate complicated concepts in a clear, practical, and understandable manner Ability to work effectively with students who have different learning styles, personalities, backgrounds, and experience levels Strong observation and evaluation skills Ability to provide honest and constructive feedback professionally Patience, emotional maturity, and the ability to remain composed in a training environment Strong organizational and documentation skills Commitment to maintaining regulatory compliance and accurate student records Professional attitude and appearance Reliable attendance and strong work ethic Team-oriented mentality with a willingness to assist wherever needed The Mindset We Are Looking For This position requires a servant-leader mentality .
