The Commercial Driver or Professional Truck Driver Instructor is responsible for teaching and training students in the safe operation of commercial vehicles, focusing on truck driving skills, traffic laws, safety protocols and professional conduct. This role ensures that students are prepared for both written exams and practical skills tests to obtain their Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The instructor will provide a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training in real-world driving scenarios.
Hours:
7:00 am
5:30 pm / Monday-Thursday 40 hours per week
Key Responsibilities:
Teach and Train Provide classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction on all aspects of commercial truck driving, including vehicle operations, safety standards, maintenance and DOT regulations. Begin class on time in an orderly and organized fashion. Curriculum Development Work with the department to develop and modify curriculum to ensure it aligns with industry standards as well as state and federal regulations. Assess Student Progress Evaluate and assess student progress through practical exams, quizzes and participation in classroom discussions. Assist with student disciplinary actions related to students academics, attendance or conduct. Ensure Safety Compliance Instruct students in safety best practices, including pre-trip inspections, accident prevention and safe driving techniques. Prepare Students for CDL Tests Prepare students for both the written and road portion of the CDL exam. Provide guidance on testing protocols, rules and expectations. Vehicle Maintenance Instruction Teach students about the basic maintenance and care of commercial vehicles, including handling maintenance logs and managing vehicle inspections. Stay Current with Industry Trends Stay informed about changes in federal and state regulations concerning commercial trucking and CDL requirements. Join or maintain membership to a professional organization and maintain your CEU's as required. Attend conferences for this professional organization. Administrative Duties Maintain accurate student records, track attendance and provide feedback on student performance. Complete required documentation for college. Prepare for class by making copies, lesson planning and posting attendance and grades. Assist the programs Externship Coordinator with externship placement, visits and coordination if necessary. Assist with placement of students, offering reference letters and resources for student placements. Attend professional advisory board meetings, graduation ceremonies, monthly program staff meetings, open houses "instructor training" and other required functions. Education & Experience High School Diploma or Equivalent; a bachelor's degree or associate degree in related field is preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience as a commercial truck driver with a clean driving record. Experience in teaching or training is a plus. Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with endorsements required for teaching truck driving (tanker, hazmat, etc.) Certification or endorsement as a CDL instructor is preferred or required based on state laws. Background Check
Must pass a criminal background check and driving record review. Compliance with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements. Travel
ability to travel for field trips or external training Continued Education
certification programs to maintain qualifications and knowledge of the latest industry trends.
Working Conditions:
Work is typically performed both in classroom setting and on a commercial vehicle driving range. Some outdoor work may be required in various weather conditions. Occasional travel for field training or industry events. Full-Time position, with occasional evening or weekend hours depending on class schedules.
