Job Description

We are seeking a Director of Literacy to be a key member of the Academic team, helping to set strategy towards a vision for exceptional literacy instruction. The Director reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Director of Literacy is a network-based position that will lead the network's efforts to improve literacy instruction through the use of high quality instructional materials. For the 2020-2021 school year, Normandy adopted a K-8 suite of curriculum materials across our schools. The Director will play a central role in this effort moving forward - driving professional learning and building/adapting associated resources and tools to the benefit of our teachers and leaders. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in elementary literacy instruction under the Missouri Learning Standards with a track record of improving student achievement.

Normandy Schools Collaborative expects this work to begin with a diagnostic process to identify current strengths and areas of improvement with our year 1 implementation, work with internal and external partners to continue to shape our strategy, and develop a long-term plan to improve teaching and learning in literacy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and implement a network-wide professional learning approach that measurably improves literacy instruction in Normandy schools
• Assess network professional learning needs through qualitative and a quantitative review of teaching and learning data, including a review of teaching practice, student work and student achievement aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards
• Set annual professional learning goals for teachers and school leaders based on diagnosed strengths and needs
• Identify, secure and manage external partners to plan and deliver professional learning, coaching and develop resources aligned to our goals
• Plan and implement a professional learning calendar - designing and overseeing training through both in-house resources and through the management of external professional learning partners in collaboration with other Directors in C and I and the Assistant Superintendent.

Work with school leaders and Assistant Superintendent to identify opportunities to develop models/examples of literacy instruction within Normandy schools - including school-level coaching of literacy teachers, the support/development of professional learning communities within schools, co-observations with principals and APs, and providing professional development directly based on school needs

Develop/adapt resources and tools for schools in support of these efforts

Design and deliver high-quality training on literacy instruction for new Normandy teachers during the summer

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Master's Degree in Education required, Doctoral degree preferred

At least 3 years of successful teaching experience, and at least 2 years as a teacher coach and/or professional development facilitator. Experience as a school leader preferred

An individual who is possessed of a growth mindset, mission-driven, and committed to serving all children

The ability to build, develop and maintain relationships with internal and external constituents including school leaders, teachers, parents, and community stakeholders

Strong leadership and staff development skills including the ability to motivate staff, manage conflict, and grow teams

A proven track record of raising literacy achievement in schools with historically underserved populations of students under the Missouri Learning standards and experience with the EL Education ELA curriculum in grades Kindergarten to 8

Strong staff development skills including knowledge of best practices in adult learning

An orientation towards outcomes and the flexibility and willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve them - which includes the need for patience in times of change

The ability to build, develop and maintain relationships with internal and external constituents including school leaders, teachers, and external partners

Self-directed with the ability to prioritize among competing responsibilities
