Director of Education / Special Education Coordinator - Therapeutic School Greater Kinston, NC / Greenville, NC Area | Full-Time, On-Site Are you an experienced Principal, Assistant Principal, Director of Education, Special Education Administrator, Education Coordinator or school leader looking for an opportunity where you can make a direct impact on students and teachers? A growing behavioral healthcare organization is seeking a Director of Education to lead a small, accredited on-site school serving students in grades 4-10 within a residential treatment program in Eastern North Carolina. This is a unique opportunity to lead an intentionally small educational program where you can be highly involved in the classroom, support and develop teachers, strengthen academic programming, and help students with significant behavioral, emotional, mental health, and learning needs achieve meaningful educational progress. The school serves approximately 40 students . The Opportunity The Director of Education provides overall leadership for the educational program and works closely with teachers, clinical professionals, residential staff, families, school systems, and organizational leadership.
What You'll Lead:
School & Educational Leadership Provide overall leadership and day-to-day oversight of the on-site school and educational program Establish and maintain a structured, supportive, student-centered learning environment Lead, supervise, coach, and develop teachers and educational staff Conduct regular classroom observations and provide meaningful feedback and coaching Review instructional plans and support teachers with curriculum, lesson planning, classroom management, and instructional strategies Lead education department meetings, staff development, and in-service training Establish departmental goals and monitor educational outcomes and performance Academic Programming Oversee curriculum, instructional programming, and educational services Ensure students receive appropriate educational programming based on their individual academic needs Monitor student achievement, academic progress, assessments, and educational outcomes Support teachers in adapting instruction for students with behavioral, emotional, developmental, or learning challenges Evaluate educational programming and implement improvements when needed Ensure classrooms and educational staff have the resources, materials, technology, and support needed to be successful Special Education & Individualized Learning Provide leadership and oversight related to IEPs, special education services, accommodations, and individualized educational plans Coach and support teachers regarding IEP components, educational documentation, and individualized instruction Help ensure appropriate educational assessments and progress monitoring are completed Collaborate with school districts and other educational partners to obtain necessary records and educational information Support educational transition planning and ensure appropriate academic information is available when students return to their home school or transition to another educational setting Student Support & Clinical Collaboration This educational program operates within a therapeutic residential environment, so collaboration is an important part of the role.
The Director of Education will:
Partner closely with clinical, behavioral health, and residential leadership Participate in multidisciplinary discussions regarding student progress and educational needs Help coordinate educational programming with each student's broader treatment goals Collaborate with clinical teams regarding students who require additional behavioral or emotional support Serve as an educational resource to the treatment team Promote consistent communication between education, clinical, residential, and administrative teams Staff Leadership A major component of this position is developing and supporting the education team.
Responsibilities include:
Provide consistent supervision, coaching, and mentorship to educational staff Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback Identify professional development and training needs Promote employee engagement, accountability, and professional growth Partner with Human Resources regarding recruiting, interviewing, credential review, onboarding, and retention of educational staff Help establish appropriate staffing and classroom coverage Build a collaborative school culture focused on both student success and staff development Program Administration & Quality The Director of Education also serves as the operational leader of the education department.
Responsibilities may include:
Develop, review, and implement educational policies and procedures Maintain required educational records and documentation Ensure compliance with applicable educational, special education, regulatory, and accreditation requirements Monitor program quality and identify opportunities for performance improvement Utilize educational and program data to evaluate outcomes and improve services Participate in organizational leadership and interdisciplinary meetings Help manage departmental resources and ensure responsible use of the education program's budget, staffing, equipment, and supplies Maintain strong relationships with families, school systems, referral partners, community organizations, and other educational stakeholders Who We're Looking For We are particularly interested in candidates who have successfully led educators and understand how to support students who may struggle in a traditional classroom environment. Strong candidates may currently be working as a: Principal Assistant Principal Director of Education Special Education Director Exceptional Children / EC Administrator Special Education Coordinator Dean or School Administrator Alternative School Administrator Therapeutic School Leader Education Coordinator with significant leadership responsibility Behavioral Health or Residential Education Leader Candidates do not need to currently work in a residential treatment program to be considered. Experience within special education, alternative education, behavioral health, therapeutic education, at-risk youth programs, or schools serving students with significant behavioral or emotional needs is highly valued. Qualifications Master's degree in Education, Special Education, Educational Leadership, School Administration, or a related discipline preferred Appropriate teaching, education, and/or school leadership licensure, or eligibility to obtain required North Carolina credentials Approximately 5+ years of education experience Prior leadership, supervision, or administrative experience within a special educational setting Experience supervising and developing teachers or educational staff Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, classroom management, and educational program development Understanding of special education practices, IEPs, individualized instruction, and student accommodations Experience working with students with behavioral, emotional, learning, or mental health challenges strongly preferred Strong communication, leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills Ability to collaborate effectively across education, clinical, and administrative teams About the Program This is an intentionally small educational environment designed to provide students with greater structure, individualized support, and access to both educational and therapeutic resources.
