English Teacher Merit Fellows Initiative Cerritos, CA Job Details Part-time | Contract $25 - $45 an hour 2 hours ago Qualifications School experience Teamwork Teaching Certification Education Teaching Full Job Description Overview The English Teacher will be responsible for teaching English Language Arts to students in Grades 6-12. The ideal candidate should be able to build strong reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, critical thinking, and communication skills while supporting a college-preparatory academic environment. This role requires a teacher who can work with students of different academic levels, including local and international students, and who is comfortable supporting both foundational skill development and advanced academic writing. Key Responsibilities Teach English Language Arts courses for middle school and high school students. Develop and deliver engaging lessons in reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, literature, and critical analysis. Support students in academic writing, essay structure, research writing, presentation skills, and college-preparatory communication. Adapt instruction to meet the needs of students with different language backgrounds and academic levels. Prepare lesson plans, assignments, assessments, and grading materials aligned with school expectations. Track student progress and provide regular academic feedback. Maintain accurate attendance, grade, and student performance records. Communicate professionally with students, parents, and school leadership regarding student progress. Support afterschool, tutoring, enrichment, or academic intervention programs as assigned. Follow all school policies regarding student safety, professional boundaries, confidentiality, and classroom conduct. Participate in faculty meetings, academic planning, professional development, and school events as needed. Qualifications Bachelor's degree required; degree in English, Education, Literature, Writing, TESOL, or a related field preferred. Teaching credential, private school teaching experience, or relevant teaching certification preferred. Prior experience teaching Grades 6-12 strongly preferred. Experience teaching English Language Arts, academic writing, literature, ESL/ELL, or college-preparatory English preferred. Strong classroom management, lesson planning, communication, and student support skills. Ability to work with both domestic and international students. Familiarity with college-preparatory writing expectations, standardized test reading/writing skills, or AP-level instruction is a plus. Must be able to complete all required background checks, fingerprinting, TB clearance, mandated reporter training, and school onboarding requirements. Preferred Skills Experience with small private school or college-preparatory school environments. Ability to support students in essay writing, research projects, public speaking, and literary analysis. Experience with ESL/ELL students or international student populations. Comfortable using learning management systems, online teaching tools, and student information systems. Flexible, collaborative, and willing to support a growing school environment. Compensation Compensation will be based on experience, qualifications, employment type, and assigned teaching load.
