We support students from Grade 1 through Grade 12 in building strong academic foundations, creative confidence, and meaningful academic portfolios through structured, high-quality learning experiences. Our creative writing program is designed to help students develop their original voice, strengthen storytelling skills, and create polished written work such as short stories, chapter books, novels, comic book scripts, personal narratives, and other creative projects. About the Creative Writing Program The Creative Writing Program supports students across elementary, middle school, and high school levels in developing imagination, structure, expression, and confidence as writers.
The focus may include:
Short story writing Chapter book writing Novel development Comic book or graphic novel writing Character development Plot structure and story arcs World-building Dialogue writing Descriptive writing Personal narrative writing Creative nonfiction Poetry and expressive writing Editing, revision, and polishing Portfolio-based writing projects Students are guided to move from ideas to outlines, drafts, revisions, and polished final pieces. The goal is not only to improve writing mechanics, but also to help students build original stories with structure, depth, and personality. Who This Role Is For We are looking for creative writing educators who are passionate about helping students tell meaningful, original stories. The ideal candidate can guide students through the full creative writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to drafting, revising, and completing a polished piece of work. Candidates should be comfortable working with students at different grade levels and adapting instruction based on each student's writing ability, interests, and creative goals. Experience supporting students with novels, chapter books, comics, storytelling projects, writing portfolios, or publication-based projects is a strong plus. What You'll Do Lead creative writing sessions for students across elementary, middle school, and/or high school levels Help students brainstorm ideas and develop original story concepts Teach plot structure, character development, setting, conflict, dialogue, pacing, and theme Guide students in writing short stories, chapter books, novels, comic book scripts, personal narratives, or other creative projects Support students through outlining, drafting, revising, editing, and polishing their work Provide individualized feedback that is encouraging, specific, and developmentally appropriate Help students strengthen grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, clarity, and voice within creative writing contexts Encourage student creativity while maintaining structure and clear writing goals Support long-term writing projects that may become portfolios, publications, or showcase pieces Maintain a structured, focused, and engaging classroom or small-group learning environment Collaborate with the Summa team on curriculum planning and student progress tracking Communicate clearly and professionally with families Who We're Looking For 2-3+ years of experience teaching writing, creative writing, English, literature, or literacy preferred Experience working with elementary, middle school, and/or high school students Strong understanding of storytelling, narrative structure, character development, and revision Ability to teach both creative expression and writing mechanics Experience with novels, short stories, chapter books, comics, screenwriting, poetry, or personal narratives is a plus Experience supporting long-term writing projects, student portfolios, or publication-based projects is a strong plus Patient, encouraging, structured, and engaging teaching style Ability to adapt instruction based on student age, level, personality, and interests Strong editing, written communication, and feedback skills Strong classroom and small-group management skills Bilingual English + Mandarin preferred but not required Ability to Commute San Marino, CA 91108
