Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Help Students Discover the Power of Their Voices Early College Charter School is seeking a passionate, skilled, and student-centered High School English Language Arts Teacher for an immediate opening during the 2026-27 school year. We are looking for an educator who believes that literacy is more than a subject-it is a pathway to critical thinking, self-expression, college access, and personal agency. The ideal candidate will create an engaging and rigorous classroom in which students read deeply, write purposefully, communicate confidently, and learn to recognize the power of their own ideas. We are seeking an ELA teacher who will bring those values into the classroom while maintaining high academic expectations, building meaningful relationships, and supporting the success of every learner. What You'll DoInstruction and Academic Preparation Plan and deliver rigorous, engaging, and standards-aligned English Language Arts instruction. Build students' skills in reading comprehension, literary analysis, evidence-based writing, research, discussion, and academic communication. Select and teach diverse, culturally responsive texts that encourage students to examine multiple perspectives and make meaningful connections. Design lessons that promote critical thinking, productive discussion, collaboration, student voice, and independent learning. Use student work, assessment data, and daily checks for understanding to adjust instruction and provide targeted support. Differentiate instruction for students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and students performing at varying academic levels. Provide appropriate scaffolds and interventions while maintaining high expectations for student achievement. Integrate social-emotional learning practices into classroom instruction and routines. Provide timely, specific, and actionable feedback that helps students strengthen their reading and writing. Prepare students to demonstrate mastery on classroom assessments, common assessments, and the New York State English Language Arts Regents examination. Classroom Culture and Student Support Establish a predictable, structured, physically safe, emotionally safe, and intellectually engaging classroom environment. Build authentic relationships with students while maintaining clear, consistent, and equitable expectations. Hold a high bar for student effort, persistence, participation, critical thinking, and quality of work. Create meaningful opportunities for student voice, choice, collaboration, and leadership. Respond to student behavior calmly, consistently, and restoratively, treating mistakes as opportunities for learning and growth. Celebrate student progress and help students develop confidence in themselves as readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators. Collaborate with special education teachers, counselors, clinicians, deans, and other support staff to meet the needs of every learner. Family and Community Engagement Develop positive, trust-based relationships with students' families and caregivers. Communicate proactively about student progress, strengths, challenges, and opportunities for support. Provide families with practical strategies and resources they can use to reinforce literacy development at home. Participate in family conferences, school events, and other community-building opportunities. Create an inclusive classroom that honors the identities, experiences, cultures, and perspectives represented within our school community. Professional Responsibilities Maintain accurate and timely records related to attendance, grading, assessment, progress monitoring, and family communication. Participate actively in school- and network-wide professional development, including coaching cycles, collaborative planning, observations, and feedback. Reflect honestly on instructional practice and respond constructively to coaching and feedback. Collaborate with colleagues to analyze student work, strengthen curriculum, align expectations, and improve instructional outcomes. Contribute positively to department meetings, grade-team meetings, professional learning communities, and the broader school community. Support schoolwide responsibilities and initiatives as directed by the Principal, Assistant Principal, and Dean. Champion an inclusive environment in which every student feels valued, challenged, and connected to the school community. What We're Looking For Strong candidates will demonstrate: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; a degree in English, education, literature, writing, or a related field is preferred. High school English Language Arts teaching experience. New York State teacher certification, or the ability and willingness to pursue certification and complete applicable state requirements. Strong knowledge of reading, writing, discussion, and literacy-development practices. Familiarity with New York State learning standards and Regents-aligned instruction. The ability to make complex texts and writing tasks accessible without lowering academic expectations. Experience differentiating instruction for students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and students with varied academic needs. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Patience, empathy, cultural responsiveness, and an unwavering belief in every student's potential. A collaborative, reflective, and solutions-oriented approach to teaching.
