Music Theory Graduate Assistant Job Description The Music Theory Graduate Assistant requires a work commitment of 10 hours per week and will receive full tuition remission plus a stipend of $2,060 per semester (Fall and Spring). Qualifications The Music Theory Graduate Assistant should possess the following qualifications:
Required:
Excellent knowledge of music theory All fundamentals: key signatures, scales, intervals, triads, sevenths
Diatonic Harmony:
Roman Numeral analysis, four-part voice leading
Chromatic Harmony:
secondary chords, Neapolitan and Aug 6th chords, modulation Grades of B or higher in four semesters of undergraduate music theory courses Patience, energy, and passion for working with undergraduate students Flexible schedule for tutoring hours Strong organizational skills Excellent communication skills, including the ability to schedule weekly meeting times and places with undergraduates and communicate regularly with theory faculty.
Preferred:
Keyboard proficiency Teaching or tutoring experience Duties/Expectations The duties of the Graduate Assistant will include, but are not limited to, the following: A work commitment of ten hours per week Regular meetings or communication with the music theory faculty (MUS 140, 145 and 146) to stay up to speed on current content covered in the classes (preferably able to attend/observe one class per week). The GA will arrange at least one group tutoring session per week outside of students scheduled class time. To fulfill their remaining hours, the GA will independently schedule on-one-one tutoring sessions in 30 or 60 minute intervals with students in need of extra help in their theory classes. Other duties as needed by the theory faculty (grading, etc.).

Class observations: 3hrs/week,
Group Tutoring:
2 hrs/week, 1-on-1 sessions: 5 hrs/week. Wage employees are paid an hourly rate for actual hours worked and are limited to working 1500 hours per year and can only work a maximum of 29 hours a week. Work hours must be counted on the basis of the twelve-month period beginning May 1 of each year and April 30 of the following year. Wage employees in all agencies (all branches of government) are limited to working no more than 1500 hours during each twelve-month period of May 1-April 30. Should you work 1500 hours prior to April 30, your services will be terminated immediately. You will not be eligible for employment again until May 1. It is the responsibility of the employee and supervisor, as well as the Office of Human Resources, to monitor these hours to ensure compliance to policy. Wage employees may not earn leave nor do they have access to the Grievance Procedure process. They are not covered by the provision of the Virginia Personnel Act and are not entitled to the benefits afforded employees occupying classified positions.
