Temporary Assignment, non-benefits eligible, 10 classroom hours per week, May, 2027 - August 2027
Budgeted Pay Range:
$5,000 - $5,695 per course assignment Summer Institutes (SI) is an academic enrichment program serving students in grades 8-11 at the time of application. SI offers intellectually curious students from around the world the opportunity to enroll in single course subjects not typically found in the high school curriculum. Courses are held live on Zoom each weekday for two hours per day in two-week sessions. This is a fully remote position that can be completed from anywhere in the United States (U.S.). This position will be performed completely online and requires you to have the ability, technology, and appropriate tools to complete tasks online.
Examples of appropriate tools are:
internet connection with sufficient strength and stability, up-to-date computer, and installed video-conferencing applications. Summer Institute Session Dates Session 1: June 14, 2027 - June 25, 2027 Session 2: July 12, 2027 - July 23, 2027 Introduction to Medicine Grades 9-11 Are you interested in learning more about your future career in medicine? Through this course, students will explore the intersection between empathetic patient care, cutting edge medical research, and high-impact community health. Each day will involve a themed case study in a different healthcare specialty (cardiology, orthopedics, pediatrics, internal medicine, and more), followed by an academic research activity or bioethics discussion. Students will also be given the opportunity to engage with current professionals who have pursued different paths to medicine, from physicians, pharmacists, and occupational therapists, to social workers and health policymakers. As a final project, students will research, evaluate, and generate a presentation on a novel medical therapeutic that interests them. This course will be a broad introduction to careers in healthcare and high-yield medical topics best suited for those interested in health sciences.
Job Responsibilities:
Course Design & Preparation Design and develop an engaging academic course appropriate for the assigned student grade level (grades 8-11, 8-9, or 10-11) that aligns with the course description published on the Summer Institutes website; obtain approval for any significant changes to the approved content Develop engaging, age-appropriate course content, assignments, activities, and independent learning experiences. Develop and submit a course syllabus for review and post course materials and assignments in Canvas prior to the start of the program. Synchronous (Live) Instruction Plan and facilitate two hours of live, synchronous instruction, including a break, each weekday during the assigned AM or PM instructional block, using a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, classroom discussions, student presentations, and small-group activities. 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. PDT Foster an inclusive and engaging learning environment that encourages student participation and collaboration. Hold small-group office hours at least twice per week during the assigned instructional time block. Self-Study & Independent Learning Assign and facilitate up to three hours of required asynchronous independent work each weekday, including readings, videos, lectures, or small-group work for group projects. Provide at least one hour of required self-study each weekday while ensuring required assignments and activities do not exceed three hours per day. Student Assessment & Evaluation Complete and sign a written evaluation for each student no later than two weeks after the end of the session; evaluations are sent to participants along with their completion certificate. Provide timely feedback for participants on assignments and projects using Canvas LMS. Program Participation Attend a required 2 hour virtual orientation session for new instructors on Wednesday, May 19, 2027 at 4pm PDT. Attend the one-hour program commencement on the final day, prepare a brief slide and a one-minute overview of the course to present. To be successful in this position, you will bring: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent course work) in a related discipline Ability to consistently perform desk-based computer and office related tasks Proficiency using computer applications, including those used for video conferencing, document production, and information management Ability to work effectively in a remote environment, including proficiency with and consistent use of virtual communication and collaboration tools such as Slack. Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions Preferred skills include: At least one year experience teaching at the high school or college level, or equivalent, with some online teaching experience Experience working remotely, demonstrating strong ability to work independently and collaboratively Interest in supporting a collaborative learning environment for all participants The expected pay range for this position is $5,000 - $5,695 per course assignment. This position is exempt and is therefore not subject to the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standards Act. To apply The priority deadline is Monday, Sept 21st.
