Norfolk State University, a NCAA Division I institution, is seeking candidates for the Deputy Athletics Director position. The Deputy Athletics Director is a senior executive within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and provides executive leadership, administrative direction, and oversight for the department's external relations enterprise, to include sports communications and media relations, marketing and fan engagement, brand management, broadcast and multimedia rights, ticketing, licensing, corporate sponsorship, revenue generation, and name, image and likeness programming. The position supervises senior staff and unit directors across the external relations enterprise and may include supervising various sports as directed by the Director of Athletics. The administrator serves as a member of the athletics executive leadership team, leads department-wide strategic initiatives, and represents the Department of Athletics to university leadership, conference and national governing bodies, media, donors, corporate partners, and the broader community.
Responsibilities:
The candidate responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Provide executive leadership, administrative direction, and oversight for all aspects of external communication and engagement within the Athletics Department, to include sports communications and media relations, marketing, fan engagement, brand management, digital and social media, broadcast and multimedia rights, licensing, sponsorship, and revenue generation. Supervise, evaluate, and develop senior staff and unit directors across the external relations enterprise; establish goals, performance standards, and accountability measures. Lead departmental strategic planning initiatives and monitor progress toward established goals and key performance indicators. Manage departmental funds, budgets, and accounts for assigned administrative units and teams. Provide administrative oversight of assigned sport programs, including head coach supervision, performance evaluation, and student-athlete welfare. Cultivate strong collaborative and working relationships with university constituents and counterparts, university affiliated entities, Division I and conference participants, and members of the broader surrounding community. Commitment to following NCAA and Conference affiliation rules. Able to maintain sensitive and confidential information. Able to work under tight deadlines with limited resources and multiple competing priorities. Ensure compliance with Federal, Commonwealth of Virginia, University, NCAA, MEAC, and Title IX rules, regulations, and procedures. Represent the Department of Athletics and act on behalf of the Director of Athletics as designated. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President and Director of Athletics. Athletics travel may be required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in Sport Management, Business Management, Marketing, Communications, or related field with twelve years of athletics related experience. Ten years' experience as a senior level administrator in athletic administration on Division I. Demonstrated experience providing oversight of multiple external relations units, to include communications, marketing, and revenue generation. Experience in compliance of NCAA rules and regulations on Division I. Experience with overseeing budgets and fiscal operations. Experience with licensing and branding. Experience with the recruitment, hiring, training, and retention of personnel. Experience with sport program oversight and head coach supervision. A successful criminal background check is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience at an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision institution or Conference office Experience in an executive leadership capacity within a Division I athletics department or conference office. Experience leading crisis communications for an athletics department or comparable public-facing organization. Salary range from $75,000.00-$115,000.00
