The Circulation Clerk is responsible for providing excellent customer service at the circulation desk while managing the library's interlibrary loan program. This position ensures smooth daily circulation operations, assists patrons with library services, oversees the library's Walking Books homebound delivery program and facilitates the borrowing and lending of materials through interlibrary loan networks. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and passionate about customer service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Circulation & Patron Services:
Greet and assist patrons with checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, and processing holds. Answer general inquiries in person, by phone, and via email, providing information about library services, policies, and procedures. Assist patrons with locating materials, using various forms of technology, and accessing digital resources. Handle overdue materials and lost item payments in accordance with library policies. Maintain an organized and tidy circulation area. Assist with processing, repair, and maintenance of library collection. Assist with programming when needed. Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Program Coordination:
Process patron requests for interlibrary loan materials, ensuring compliance with local and state lending guidelines. Search and request materials from participating libraries using interlibrary loan software. Receive, process, and distribute borrowed and returned items, ensuring timely delivery to patrons. Manage outgoing ILL requests from other libraries, preparing items for shipment and tracking due dates. Maintain accurate records of ILL transactions and generate reports as needed. Communicate with borrowing and lending institutions to resolve any issues with requested materials.
Walking Books Homebound Delivery Program:
Manage the Walking Books program to ensure patrons unable to visit the library receive regular deliveries. Maintain communication with homebound patrons to coordinate delivery schedules and reading preferences. Select and prepare materials for delivery based on patron interests and requests. Deliver items on schedule and return borrowed items to the library. Track usage and keep accurate records of all deliveries. Promote the program to eligible community members and assist with outreach efforts.
Administrative & Additional Duties:
Assist in maintaining accurate circulation and interlibrary loan statistics. Help promote library services, programs, and resources to patrons. Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities. Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills:
High school diploma or equivalent required Experience working in a library or customer service setting is a plus. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to prioritize and handle high volumes of work. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office, library software, and online databases. Ability to lift books and materials (up to 25 lbs.) and push book carts as needed.
