Job Description

Position Summary The Library Assistant supports the daily operations of the Nazarene Theological Seminary Library and provides welcoming, knowledgeable service to students, faculty, staff, and other library users. The position has primary responsibility for interlibrary loan and serials and assists with circulation, inventory, cataloging, collection maintenance, the Institutional Repository, and other library services. The Library Assistant works closely with the Director of Library Services and other library staff to ensure accurate and efficient library operations and excellent service to the NTS community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Interlibrary Loan
  • Manage interlibrary loan borrowing and lending requests.
  • Process requests through OCLC WorldShare and other applicable systems.
  • Search for and request materials from other libraries on behalf of NTS patrons.
  • Process requests from other libraries for materials held by NTS.
  • Monitor due dates, renewals, recalls, overdue materials, and other interlibrary loan transactions.
  • Communicate with patrons and lending libraries regarding requests and problems.
  • Maintain accurate interlibrary loan records and statistics. Serials
  • Receive and check in print journals, periodicals, and other continuing resources.
  • Maintain accurate serial records in the library management system.
  • Identify and follow up on missing, delayed, or duplicate issues.
  • Prepare serials for binding as needed. Circulation and Patron Services
  • Provide friendly and professional assistance to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other library users.
  • Check materials in and out and assist patrons with renewals, holds, and account questions.
  • Create and maintain patron records.
  • Assist patrons with locating books, journals, eBooks, articles, and other library resources.
  • Provide basic assistance with the library catalog, databases, and other research tools.
  • Answer library questions by phone, email, and in person and refer more complex research questions to the Director of Library Services as appropriate.
  • Shelve materials and maintain accurate shelf order.
  • Assist with opening, closing, and general operation of the library. Collection Maintenance
  • Assist with inventory, shelf reading, shifting, and other collection-maintenance projects.
  • Identify damaged materials and assist with basic repair or preparation for replacement.
  • Help maintain an orderly, accessible, and welcoming library environment.
  • Assist with maintaining records related to dissertations, theses, and other institutional publications.
  • Perform scanning and basic digital file preparation as needed. General Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate records and statistics related to assigned responsibilities.
  • Assist with special projects and library events.
  • Help document library procedures and workflows.
  • Work collaboratively with library staff and other NTS departments.
  • Participate in training related to library systems, procedures, and services.
  • Perform scanning and basic digital file preparation as needed.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality. Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work accurately with detailed records and repetitive processes.
  • Strong customer-service and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic proficiency with computers and willingness to learn library-specific software and systems.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple responsibilities, and ask questions when clarification is needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small library team. Preferred
  • College coursework or degree.
  • Previous experience working in a library, educational institution, or customer-service environment.
  • Experience with library management systems, interlibrary loan, serials, cataloging, or acquisitions.
  • Familiarity with OCLC products or other library systems.
  • Experience working in a theological or academic library. Physical Requirements The position requires the ability to:
  • Work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Retrieve and shelve library materials at varying heights.
  • Bend, reach, and move throughout library stack areas.
  • Lift and carry books, boxes, and library materials as required for normal library operations.
Work Schedule This is a part-time position of approximately 20-29 hours per week. The work schedule is established in consultation with the Director of Library Services based on library staffing and operational needs. Generally, the library hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some evening or weekend hours may be required. The Library Assistant contributes to the mission of Nazarene Theological Seminary by helping provide reliable access to the information resources and library services needed for theological education, research, ministry, and lifelong learning.
Pay:
$15.00 per hour Expected hours: 20.0 - 29.0 per week
