Job Description

Summary:
The Circulation Assistant is responsible for contributing to the efficient circulation of library materials. By performing a variety of reader services, the employee is providing an important service to the patrons, while helping to safeguard and maintain the library's resources. Additionally, part of the employee's time will be spent shelving returned library material.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following list is representative of the typical duties and responsibilities performed. The employee's actual duties and responsibilities may vary slightly depending on department needs and individual assignments.
Circulation:
Assist patrons in person and via telephone with their questions, providing assistance, direction or instruction as required. Maintain good relationships with the public and co-workers, communicating effectively, courteously and tactfully. Become familiar with the library's automated system and subsequent upgrades. Handle patron complaints and problems patiently and professionally. Perform opening and closing procedures according to established procedure. Answer telephones, transfer calls, take messages, and ensure that messages are delivered. Check out materials according to established procedure. Check in materials, assess condition, and send for repair as needed. Renew materials according to procedure. Register patrons for library cards. Sort mail, checking in magazines and newspapers. Assist with training new staff members, modeling good work habits. Assist in performing the essential duties of absent staff. Process holds as needed. Collect money for fines and lost or damaged materials, accurately entering transactions in a Square system. Shelve returned library materials and maintain the collection by reading shelves and keeping material in order according to Dewey Decimal system. Maintain the overall neatness of the library by straightening items, removing discarded paper, and doing light housekeeping. Attend mandatory monthly staff meetings (Zoom is available).
Education and Experience:
As an entry-level position, previous library experience is not required, but would be helpful. Must possess a high school diploma and have proficient clerical skills, including a working knowledge of personal computers and basic business software (e.g., word processing, email, Internet use, etc.)
Special Skills/Certification/License:
Ability to communicate effectively, a demeanor of patience, friendliness, courteousness, and a desire to help others. Basic organizational skills. Act 34 and Act 151 clearances. Reliable transportation to and from work.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear at a conversational level, use hands to handle objects, stand or sit for long periods of time, lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, reach, stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and traverse stairs. Occasionally, the employee is required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Generally, duties are performed in a climate-controlled environment, but the employee is exposed to outside weather and uncomfortable fluctuations in temperature within the building.
