Job Description

Description Two weeks prior to the deadline to submit applications, the diversity of current applicants will be assessed. The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Managing Director, Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) at College of the Canyons.
Salary Placement:
This twelve (12) month per year position will be on an individual contract. This classified administrator position will be placed on Range 14 of the Administrator Salary Schedule. Step placement is based on experience. Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ( $11,421.00 / $11,594.00 / $11,766.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range. All administrators are on an employment contract and exempt from overtime and compensatory time accumulation.

Example of Duties Overall Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President, Workforce & Economic Advancement, the Managing Director, Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) provides leadership and administrative oversight for the programming, operations, production, marketing, and community engagement activities of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center. Oversees academic, college, community, public, and commercial use of the Performing Arts Center, including facility and technical operations, programming and talent booking, contracts and rentals, marketing and audience development, revenue-generating activities, and assigned personnel. Develops partnerships and resources that support the Performing Arts Center's educational and cultural programs and advance its role as a resource for the College and community.
Essential Job Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Oversees programming and talent booking for PAC productions, including Spotlight Series events; negotiates fees, technical riders, and related production requirements with artists and agents; reviews associated contracts and agreements; and coordinates with the District's Business Office to ensure compliance with District policies, procedures, and contractual requirements. Oversees implementation of the District's memorandum of understanding governing access to and use of the Performing Arts Center by City performing arts organizations, ensuring activities are coordinated in accordance with established terms, District procedures, and facility requirements. Collaborates with academic departments to review production-related course schedules and identify facility, technical, staffing, and production requirements necessary to support scheduled academic productions. In collaboration with the Assistant Technical Director and Visual and Performing Arts departments, oversees production planning and coordination for academic rehearsals, performances, and events, including staffing, scheduling, facility, technical, and resource requirements. Collaborates with the Dean of Visual and Performing Arts, Assistant Technical Director, faculty, and appropriate staff to oversee the planning and coordination of academic rehearsals, productions, performances, and events within the PAC, including the assessment and allocation of staffing, scheduling, facility, technical, and other operational resources necessary to support academic program needs. Coordinates with appropriate District personnel to implement risk management, safety, security, and facility-use requirements for PAC productions and events. Advises users regarding applicable policies and procedures and oversees the security and appropriate use of production spaces, equipment, and materials. Provides leadership for PAC program planning and the supervision and development of assigned personnel. Develops programming strategies and identifies performance opportunities designed to attract diverse audiences, strengthen community engagement, and advance the goals of the Performing Arts Center. Collaborates with the Dean, Visual and Performing Arts, in developing short- and long-range program plans for the Performing Arts Center that support academic programs, community engagement, and institutional goals. In collaboration with the Box Office Manager, develops and recommends ticket pricing and revenue projections for PAC events, including attendance projections, pricing structures, subscription and series packages, and promotional discounts. Evaluates revenue performance and the cost-effectiveness of promotional activities to inform future programming and marketing strategies. Analyzes patron, attendance, and ticketing data and relevant external market data to identify audience demographics, preferences, and purchasing trends and uses findings to develop audience-growth, engagement, programming, and revenue strategies. Develops an annual marketing and public relations strategy, in collaboration with the Public Information Office and Box Office Manager, that supports PAC programming, audience development, revenue, community engagement, and promotional goals. Develops and oversees implementation of the annual PAC promotional campaign, including marketing plans, schedules, resource allocation, and associated budgets. Collaborates with the Public Information Office to develop and coordinate PAC marketing and promotional materials across appropriate print and digital communication channels. Develops and administers marketing budgets for seasonal campaigns, individual events, and special projects in coordination with the Public Information Office. Authorizes and monitors expenditures within established authority and ensures appropriate fiscal controls and compliance with District procedures. Develops and maintains strategic relationships with community, civic, arts, educational, and business organizations to promote PAC programs, identify partnership opportunities, and strengthen community engagement. Represents the PAC and District at meetings, presentations, events, and other functions as appropriate. Partners with the College Foundation to develop and implement short- and long-range strategies that support PAC fundraising, community engagement, sponsorship, and resource-development goals. Collaborates with the College's Grants Office to identify external funding opportunities and develop grant proposals that support PAC programs, productions, facilities, and strategic initiatives; assists with implementation and compliance for awarded grants as assigned. In coordination with the College Foundation, cultivates relationships with prospective donors, sponsors, and community partners and participates in fundraising and resource-development activities that support PAC programs and initiatives. Oversees compliance with applicable safety, fire, occupancy, and production-related requirements within PAC facilities and ensures established safety practices and procedures are communicated and followed by staff, performers, contractors, and facility users. Oversees the scheduling and coordination of PAC facilities, performances, rehearsals, rentals, academic activities, and special events to maximize facility utilization, minimize scheduling conflicts, and ensure timely communication with affected stakeholders. Oversees PAC facility rental operations, including rental inquiries, scheduling, cost estimates, agreements, contractual coordination, and facility-use requirements in accordance with District policies and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Demonstrated Knowledge and Abilities:
Position requires the knowledge of: Principles and practices of performing arts center administration, programming, production management, facility operations, theatrical production, and event coordination; Principles and practices of organizational leadership, personnel management, supervision, staff development, and performance evaluation; Budget development and administration, revenue forecasting, resource allocation, contract administration, marketing, audience development, fundraising, grants, and sponsorships; Applicable laws, regulations, District policies and procedures, contractual requirements, safety practices, accessibility standards, and industry requirements related to performing arts center operations; Position requires the ability to: Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate complex programs, productions, performances, events, and facility operations and develop short- and long-range goals and strategies; Analyze operational, financial, attendance, ticketing, and patron data to evaluate effectiveness and support informed decision-making; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, artists, agents, community organizations, businesses, donors, sponsors, and other internal and external stakeholders; Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; exercise sound judgment and problem-solving skills; manage multiple priorities; and represent the Performing Arts Center and District effectively; Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, staff, and the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Four (4) years of full-time equivalent increasingly responsible experience in performing arts center management, theatre operations, arts administration, technical theatre, event or production management, or a closely related field, including at least two (2) years of supervisory or management experience. Experience must include responsibility for planning and coordinating complex productions, performances, programs, or events; managing personnel and operational resources; and working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Desirable Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Theatre Arts, Arts Administration, Performing Arts Management, Business Administration, Technical Theatre, Technical Design, or a related field. Experience managing the operations of a performing arts center, theatre, or comparable multi-use venue. Experience with performing arts programming, talent booking, contract and technical rider negotiations, budget administration, facility rentals, marketing and audience development, community partnerships, fundraising, grants, and revenue-generating activities. Experience supervising professional, technical, and production staff. Experience supporting both academic and professional performing arts productions. Knowledge of contemporary theatrical production systems, equipment, safety practices, and facility operations.
Physical Characteristics :
The work environment is an office and in the field settings. The physical demands for this position include moderate bending, stooping and reaching; moderate lifting (50 pounds) and the occasional exertion of 10 to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others. Vision to read printed material, ability to drive to offsite service facilities. Hand and digit dexterity to operate tools and equipment specific to the trade. Handle and work with various materials and objects which are essential aspects of this position.
