Job Description

Archaeological Technician - On-Call Mead & Hunt, Inc United States, Jersey, Elizabeth 30 Union Street (Show on map) Jul 24, 2026 Mead & Hunt, a nationally recognized professional services consulting firm, is seeking a problem-solver to join our collaborative and innovative Cultural Resources team. The hours for this position could vary weekly from zero to 40, and potentially sometimes more than 40. This position will work from various archaeological sites around the Mid-Atlantic; it is currently an on-call (i.e. no benefits) position which could potentially be converted to a regular, benefits-eligible position depending on workload.
Responsibilities include:
Identifying archaeological artifacts and features Performing field, laboratory, or office tasks Understanding and executing field methodologies, as well as laboratory and reporting methodologies as appropriate Training less experienced Archaeological Technicians in appropriate field techniques Communicating project, safety, or vehicle issues Completing field notes and paperwork Completing tasks on time and on budget Traveling to project sites, primarily Monday through Friday A valid driver's license is required.
The successful candidate will have:
Bachelor's degree (or higher) in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field from an accredited college or university --OR-- If no degree, at least four (4) years of hands-on experience conducting archaeological studies in a cultural resource management setting The ideal candidate will have any/all of the following: Completion of archaeological field school (preferred) Knowledge of standard archaeological field methods for all phases of investigation Understanding of the primary themes of prehistory and history in our region Basic understanding of the National Register of Historic Places Criteria for Evaluation Understanding of data collection using handheld GPS units Experience reading maps and using a compass Ability to dig, kneel and crouch for extended periods of time, lift at least 40 pounds, walk long distances across challenging terrain, and maintain adequate fitness to perform tasks Ability to work outdoors in hot or cold temperatures, in conditions that may include wind, rain, and/or snow If you have strong communication and organizational skills, are self-motivated, and can work well both independently and as part of a team, complete the online application process for this job posting at www.meadhunt.com/careers.
Hourly Wage Range:
$20.00-$23.00 - Actual compensation may vary due to other factors such as experience, skill set or location.
