10 months (200 days) Essential Job Functions Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual or team sports, utilizing curriculum and other appropriate learning activities. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning and implementing a balanced physical education program. Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement. Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division's basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course and SOL standards; provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas. Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students. Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary. Maintains control of storage and use of school property. Evaluates each student's growth in physical skills, knowledge and contribution in team sports. Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress. Supervises students in out of classroom activities during the assigned working day. Administers testing in accordance with division testing practices. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. Plans and delivers an instructional program to students, consistent with school district goals and objectives. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and promotes student learning, while managing student behavior. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents. Manages the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure environment is conducive to the learning process. Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statutes and local policies, regulations and guidelines related to public schools Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required) Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area. Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, and planning. Knowledge of a wide range of scientific subject areas. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Education:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

Certification:

Virginia teaching license or ability to obtain a Virginia Teaching license. Working Conditions and Physical Demands Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
