Reading/Literacy Specialist (1 Year Position)

General Description:

The primary function of the Reading/Literacy Specialist is to provide strong Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention to increase student achievement.

Qualifications:

Valid CT State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement, if applicable Master's Degree in reading Experience as a classroom teacher and/or providing reading interventions Reports to:

Building Principal and Assistant Superintendent Performance Expectations and Responsibilities:

Diagnose, assess, prescribe and evaluate the reading needs of individual students to determine the level of need. Compile various sources of data including standardized, diagnostic and screening. Provide direct, explicit and responsive instruction to students in Tier 2 and Tier 3 in literacy, and progress monitor students weekly and record data in the data platform including those who may have limited English proficiency. Observe students in the classroom upon teacher or administrator request. Implement the MTSS process through data analysis and track student achievement. Collect, disaggregate and analyze student data using Performance Matters (or any other district selected platform) when creating a profile of needs for students in need of intervention. Plan and schedule Tier 2 and 3 interventions overseeing the general execution of literacy interventions and assist with identifying students for placement in intervention groups. Communicates with teachers, administration, and families regarding student progress. Participate in MTSS, PPT, and Data Team meetings when appropriate. Maintain familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized reading assessments for the purpose of implementation, data and adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests. Continue to acquire professional knowledge in the methods of addressing unfinished learning and differentiation in reading/writing by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research. Complete any other tasks or assignments designated by the administration

Necessary Skills :

Expertise in Literacy. Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated and responsive instruction based upon student learning styles and strengths. Knowledge of MTSS. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and families. Ability to follow policy and procedures. Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully; develop alternative solutions; and, work well in group problem-solving situations. Ability to adapt to change in the work environment; manage competing demands;adapt approach or method to best fit the situation; and able to deal with frequent change. Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior. Ability to be objective and open to others' views. Proficient with the use of technology for data collection; personnel management; curriculum work.

Terms of Employment:

Salary and work year to be determined by the contract between the Norwich Board of Education and the Norwich Teachers League.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of support services by the Building Principal, Curriculum Coordinator and/or Assistant Superintendent.
