Part-Time Location:
Bergen Debate Club, New Jersey (In-Person) The Bergen Debate Club is seeking a passionate and dedicated part-time Debate Teacher to join our growing team. We work with students in grades 5-12, offering debate enrichment programs after school and on the weekends. This position provides an exciting opportunity to make a lasting impact on young minds while fostering skills in argumentation, critical thinking, and public speaking.
Key Responsibilities:
Teach engaging debate classes for students in grades 5-12, focusing on skill development in Public Forum Debate and Parliamentary Debate. Provide students with constructive feedback during class, and evaluate homework to help them improve their debate techniques. Implement a vertically aligned curriculum designed to build debate proficiency across all age levels. Manage classroom dynamics to create a positive and focused learning environment for students of varying skill levels. Collaborate with the competitive travel team, offering coaching support, preparation, and feedback as they get ready for debate tournaments. Assist in developing debate strategies, case preparation, and other related tasks for the travel team. Maintain consistent communication with students regarding student progress and upcoming events. Participate in ongoing professional development to stay updated on debate education best practices and trends. Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that adheres to the club's guidelines and expectations. Priority is for working on the weekends (specifically Friday)
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in any field. Experience in either teaching or competing in debate (Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas, Parliamentary, Policy Debate formats). We teach mostly Public Forum debate. Strong communication and organizational skills. Commitment to working with middle and high school students, with the ability to adapt teaching methods for different age groups and learning styles.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Prior teaching experience, particularly in debate, public speaking, or a related field. Experience working with competitive debate teams at the middle or high school level. Can drive to up to three locations including Glen Rock, Fort Lee, Livingston, or White Plains.
